Safe.
That's how Jeremie always made her feel. Protected and cared for; secure.
And they were safe now; very much so.
Outside, things were dangerous. It was April First, and Kadic seemed to go crazy on this day each year. The school was a war zone. Any doorknob could be covered with glue; every corner could be hiding an ambush. Nothing and no one could be trusted. Nowhere was safe.
Except right here.
Jeremie's room was perhaps the safest place on campus right now. The door was locked and bolted shut, every crevice stuffed with blankets. Heavy drapes covered the windows. The outside world was outside, unable to enter, unable to hurt or humiliate Aelita. Here, she was truly safe.
And there was Jeremie, sitting in the mellow artificial light of the room, happily typing away. He was her guardian on this, the most dangerous of all days, and she was grateful.
But now that the first waves of panic had passed, she wanted him to be something more than her guardian. She typed a command of her own into her laptop. The gadget obeyed, giving her precisely what she wanted.
Music filled the air now, and Jeremie turned to look at her. Aelita smiled and stood up, offering him a hand. He paused only long enough to save his work. If he hadn't, Aelita would be quite concerned.
And then they danced. Waltzed, really. They moved quietly to the tune Aelita created herself, one that always reminded her of the way she felt when Jeremie held her like this and she was safe. And she was safe now, no doubt about it. The door and the window would let nothing through – not light, not sound, and certainly not any April annoyance. They could dance all they liked and no one would see them, or tease them.
And in this safe place, totally cut off from outside world, Aelita leaned forward and kissed Jeremie. And then they were in another world, even smaller and even safer, protected not only from the mischief of Kadic students, but from anything and everything the world cared to throw at them.
It was good to be safe.
