the lamentations of my heart are eternal

(sing for absolution)

He's a failure, he's always known that. His mother died giving birth to him (he entered the world hurting people) and he couldn't stop his father from killing himself (it was his father, goddammit; how could he not have seen it coming?). Obito was dead because he was way too stupid and proud and weak (he knows for sure he's letting Obito down with his visions of the future); and then Rin died too because he couldn't save her from her grief (he'd promised Obito he'd always take care of her). Sensei had been way out of his reach that night for him to even wrap his mind around what was happening, but the point is, he still should have done something (and yet, once again…).

People he loves always end up dead around him because he's a failure, and that is a burden he wouldn't wish even on his worst enemy. So, when Sasuke starts going down that same wrong path Kakashi himself only realized was wrong when it was already too late for him, he tries to show the boy what life really is about. He tries to show him what's really important.

He guesses he shouldn't be surprised when he fails at that too.
