Summary: Post FOB, songfic. Martha contemplates her role in the Doctor's life.
Disclaimer: I don't own Doctor Who or anything to do with the musical Oliver!
Author's Note: I've had this idea for a while, and today decided to perfect it. My regular Doctor/Rose shippers are probably thinking of murdering me right about now, but I believe that the song works better for Martha.
As Long As He Needs Me
Martha lay down on her bed and sighed. After 2 long months in 1913, it was great to be back on the TARDIS. Living that life, that lie, was the hardest thing she'd ever had to do. But she had to be a friend to the Doctor, and so she'd obeyed him as best she could, without question. Softly, Martha started singing to herself.
As long
as he needs me
I know
where I must be
I'll
cling on steadfastly
As long
as he needs me
She knew her place on the TARDIS. She knew her role, and what was expected of her. She knew how hard this life was. But she was determined to stick to it, for the Doctor's sake.
As long
as life is long
I'll
love him, right or wrong
She'd always been attracted to the Doctor, and their extreme lifestyle had caused her to develop feelings for him. However, she knew he didn't feel the same way. And it was hard for her to keep going knowing that she'd always be second best to a girl that wasn't even there - the infamous Rose Tyler.
And
somehow I'll be strong
As long
as he needs me
Somehow, she thought, I'll muster the strength from within. Somehow I'll manage to keep moving on. I'll be the one to hold his hand and stop him from being lonely.
If you
are lonely then you will know
When
someone needs you, you love them so
He'd told her of a woman named Donna who told him he needed someone to stop him. All she could do was support him, give him someone to lean on and love him, even though he didn't love her back.
I won't
betray his trust
Though
people say I must
On that night with Professor Lazarus, her mother had been begging her to stop living a life of danger with a man she'd only just met. But Martha couldn't do that. Not yet, anyway. Not while she had more of the world to see. Not while the Doctor still needed her.
I've
got to stay true just
As long
as he needs me
Tears came to Martha's eyes as she sang.
If you
are lonely then you will know
When
someone needs you, you love them so
I won't
betray his trust
Though
people say I must
I've
got to stay true just
As long
as he needs me
Martha sat up as she heard a noise coming from the doorway. The door creaked open, to reveal the Doctor standing there. Martha gasped. The Doctor took a few steps into the room, then ran towards Martha and embraced her in a warm hug of friendship. A smile formed on Martha's face as she had a realisation. All the pain, all the heartache, all the sorrow – it was worth it just to know the Doctor and to be his friend.

I know it's short, but I couldn't do much else with it. Please review!
