Meg, hints of Duncan/Veronica

Note: Kind of AU, because we haven't seen Meg since 1x21.

Meg, you are the last nice person at Neptune High.

Meg thinks about the start of her friendship with Veronica Mars, and she laughs bitterly. Meg knows she was a fool, thinking that Veronica was a victim and it was her duty to help save her.

When her friends hackled Veronica, Meg stood up for her. She thought there was more going on underneath Veronica's hard exterior.

How stupid could she be?

She caught the looks Veronica would send her way when she was with Duncan, thinking she'd never see. She saw the way Duncan looked at Veronica, thinking she wasn't paying any attention.

Meg was paying attention, but she chose to ignore it, thinking that they were her friends and there was no way they would ever betray her.

She even helped Veronica get ready for the 80s dance, she helped Veronica get together with Deputy Leo—and for what? In the end, she just went back to Duncan. Or Duncan went back to her.

Either way, Meg ended up with the short end of the deal. She hated that.

Ever since Lizzie was born, she kept getting the short end of the deal. But she always played nice. She was so happy when she found out she was going to have a little sister. But then Meg and Lizzie hit puberty, and Lizzie went wild.

Their parents were so busy trying to rope Lizzie in, Meg just went about her business like a good girl, doing her homework, eating all of her vegetables, doing whatever her parents thought to require of her. She never gave any of it a second thought.

Lizzie may seem like the "black sheep" of the Manning family, but Meg would give anything to have her parents pay half as much attention to her as they do to Lizzie. She'd give anything if she could think, just for a second, that Duncan really did like her. If she could just believe Duncan wasn't just using her as some Veronica stand in.

But Meg knew that Duncan loved Veronica. Always had, always would. It started with his breakdown after Logan's surprise party. Then his incessant trips to the hospital to keep Veronica company while her dad was recovering.

Then the late nights studying for finals, working on the Navigator. Then, right before prom, Duncan dumped Meg.

Meg already had her dress, her shoes, her purse, appointments for her hair and nails—Veronica didn't even go to prom. But it didn't matter. All the makeup and the glitz and glamour of prom wouldn't help Meg to stop feeling like second place. Just the stand-by, a replacement, a good old girl who never gave anyone any trouble.

Meg was so tired of being the good girl.
