They were closer now, Fernando
Ev'ry hour, ev'ry minute seemed to last eternally
I was so afraid, Fernando
We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die
There were times in her life when she simply couldn't help but cry in their Head's dorm. She came there with tear-filled eyes, struggled through the door and took a deep breath before the world crushed her and she fell on the soft carpet that lay next to the fireplace. She cried, wanting to scream, she was afraid of the shadows under the armchair but couldn't move because it would be too much. She was sobbing and weeping and thinking how pitiful she must be – but after all she didn't really care that much.
And that was where he found her every time. That was where he came when he saw she wasn't eating dinner with her friends, and that was where he found her crying her heart out. He sat next to her and took her to his lap and ran his fingers through her red hair and couldn't stop the lonely tear fall down his own chin before it was too late to blink it away. He was holding her and crying with her and kept telling her it would all turn out okay.
They won't get you. I won't let them hurt you. I will fight, I will protect you and keep you safe or die when trying. And that made her cry even harder, and every single time her breath cracked he died a little inside. Because she was his light, his biggest reason to fight, and he didn't want to see the fear in her eyes or hear her heartbreaking sob. He made a silent promise to himself to do whatever he could to see her smile again. If he failed, he would never forgive himself.
There were more and more these nights when the last school-term came to its end and the dark upon the world increased. But there were also happy moments, small smiles and silent whispers in the dinner table, intertwined hands and big decisions to make. The simple ring in her finger felt strange, but the meaning itself gave her back some of the strength she'd thought she'd already lost, and when she fell on the carpet up in the dormroom he was there waiting for her. He carried her in his arms, right where she wanted to be, and his were the first eyes she met in the early morning.
So came the time they had to step out to the real world with only each other as their safety, and she decided there was no more time for crying on the floor. They started fighting, they did anything they could, and when they weren't on the battlefield they tried to enjoy all the small things they had in their lives. They found a small house, moved in together, promised to love in sickness and in health. Until death do us apart. And in the middle of it all, she felt the strange happiness inside her that made her go on.
I can see it in your eyes
How proud you were
To fight for freedom in this land
