Written for the prompt "Hibari in a vineyard/apple orchard." Thank you to Lumelle for the prompt!
Reborn is the property of Amano Akira.
The day was hot, and the air is still warm and thick as twilight draws near. Dark clouds hang overhead, marring the formerly clear sky and thunder rumbles in the distance, sounding the incoming threat of a midsummer storm. Wind rustles through the trees, tearing dead leaves from their branches and making the thinner tree trunks creak and sway ominously in the breeze. Hibari Kyouya pays none of these warnings any mind, and continues to try and nap in the soft grass beneath one of the apple trees in the orchard behind the Cavallone Manor.
He likes it here, lying in the soft grass beneath the trees and blinking into the soft dapples of sunlight that broke through the leaves above his head. Hibird is sitting in the tree above, ruffling its feathers against the chill breeze and singing, the shrill tones being carried away before they can quite reach Hibari's ears. The sweet tang of the apples lingers on his palate, and he licks his lips unconsciously, seeking any remaining flavour left from his earlier snack. Hibari sighs softly, pulls his coat around his shoulders and lies down once again, shutting his eyes.
The day is nearly perfect, but something is still missing. And he will wait for it, in the same way that he's been waiting for the sunset since dawn.
Hibari does not remember when he fell asleep, but the next thing he knows he is being awoken by the Bucking Horse. The older man's hair is plastered to his face - on which he's wearing the most ridiculously concerned expression - and his clothes are dappled with droplets of rain, despite the fact that he's carrying an umbrella. It takes Hibari a moment to realise that it's raining; the leaves of the apple tree protected him so well that he's almost completely dry.
The moment Hibari sits up, Cavallone smiles with relief and reflexively steps away.
"Rise and shine, Kyouya."
"Why did you bother waking me?" Hibari questions, and he scowls when Dino catches the hint of childish indignation in his voice.
"It's going to storm."
Hibari blinks tiredly, and then glances up at the sky; far from having a few dark cloud drifting across the bright blue, the storm is now so close and so violent that Hibari can not longer tell if it's past sunset.
"Come inside, Kyouya," Dino smiles, and he holds out a hand to help Hibari to his feet. Hibari hesitates for a moment before accepting. It's always disappointing, he thinks, to have to leave as soon as everything is near perfect.
The moment Hibari is on his feet, the heavens open above them and rain pours down, soaking them both through to the bone. Hibari scowls, but Dino is laughing and running ahead, never loosening his grip on the younger man's hand.
Once they are inside, left totally alone and wrapped in large, expensive-looking towels to warm their cold skin, Dino leans over and captures Hibari's lips in a soft kiss. After they part, Dino grins apologetically and once again extends his hand to his former student.
"I'm sorry that we didn't get to see the sunset. Tomorrow?"
Hibari nods silently and accepts Dino's hand, intertwining their fingers. The sweetness of the apples once again seems to be lingering unceasingly on the tip of his tongue.
Enjoying perfection with the one you love is something worth waiting for.
End.
