The Ballad and Birth of a Mushroom

A long time ago there was a field full of blossoms

And two plumbers happen to come along with their princess friend

Each day they would come to the field and have a picnic

Soon they got tired of coming and went else where

Whereas the princess kept coming, though she had a new place to go

For in the middle of the field, was a white mushroom

The way it stood out made the princess wonder if perhaps…it was alive

She never thought about if after that for a long time

But each time she went there she would look closer at it

The temptation of picking it up was paralyzing

Until one day, she knelt down on both knees and put her hands on it

As she was about to do this the mushroom jumped up

She shrieked and fell backwards

The mushroom embarrassingly apologized and introduced himself

I am not a mushroom, but a mere deformed toad

Do not mistake me my dear, but there are many others like me around

Just open your true eyes and look around

And surely the princess did this and was amazed

For she had never seen so many beautiful creatures in her life

She knew she couldn't tell the plumber boys

For they would misunderstand her and perhaps hurt her new friend

So she promised the little guy that she would return for him

Days past and no sign of her

Feeling rejected he climbed back into his hole in the ground

As the weather changed from sun to snow

He gave up hope

All his friends wondered when their time would come to emerge

Another year went by

As the first day of spring approached he sighed one last time

But as he lifted his head up he saw a familiar dress, could it be?

The princess was crying

For she had forgotten where her friend was

Feeling confused he hopped up and went to her

Why be you crying?

She wiped her face and looked at him

I didn't forget, I just remembered

I'm allergic to mushrooms

He gave her a special necklace

You shall not sneeze one more time around me and my friends

She smiled and kissed him

Thus beginning a beautiful friendship that would never cease
