You were the best of us, Duo.
So why, honey, did you go and do that for?
I know, honey. You miss her.
Don't you think I would've known? Little Hilde... so innocent... Too bad, she would've made a terrific dolly.
I know everything about you Duo. What you like to eat. What you secretly called your former Gundam. Where you live. I know everything there is about you, including things you may not even know. Things you may not even WANT to know.
We were unstoppable.
But you left me. Here, to live by myself, faced by four empty walls. Four very pure white walls. I don't deserve such walls.
You left me, Duo. You left me to face my demons head on all by myself. With no one to help me.
The others whisper and glance behind my back. You don't think I know?
I know everything Duo.
Your dreams.
Your loves.
Your nightmares.
And believe me, sweetheart. I know your nightmares. And guess what?
I'm coming back, babe. Save me a kiss, will you?

Duo woke up screaming, flinging off his bed sheets. He was dreaming about her again. That rosebud mouth mouthing to him the question, which had plagued him for the past year.
He felt so cold. He glanced at the other side of the bed next to him. So empty and devoid of her. Gone was her perfume that delightful citrus scent he loved to smell. Gone was that tousled pile of dark blue hair that decorated the pillows. Her happy voice serenading him to awareness in the morning.
God, he missed her.
Every night for the past few months, that nightmare of the discovery of her body in their apartment. Tied up by the hands and skinned. By the looks of it, alive too. Blood all over the place. It was a crimson bloodbath.
His nightmare.

Sunshine! I dreamed every day of this, you know. Just dancing under that pure gold light, reveling in its warmth.
It reminds me of you, darling.
I'm coming for you soon. I'm coming for you very soon, my sweet. Together we'll make the perfect couple, just like we used to do! We'll paint the whole town red.
Literally.
I laugh at the thought of it. Happiness, happiness, happiness!
To see my darling Duo and to play with you again.
Excited? I'm jumping with joy at just the mere dream of being with you once more.

Yet another day in my wretched existence, thought Duo as he drove slowly to work. Preventers staff meeting today. That'd be the highlight of his day.
It wasn't his fault, his friends, one after another; spoke those damning words to him. In the outside, he barely kept from screaming that yes, it was all his fault. If he hadn't fallen in love with his angel, this would never have happened. She would've married someone else, she would've had a hundred kids, been the loving wonderful wife to anyone else but him.
She would've lived.
No sense in dwelling in that again now, old friend, that voice whispered in his mind. Duo swerved, narrowly missing crunching his car into a tree. That voice again...
The voice that sprang up when he fought in Deathscythe, and then Deathscythe Hell. The voice that decided who's head should roll, and who he should save. The voice that kept him at the brink of insanity as his scythe danced against the darkness of space, creating arches of light.
He turned the ignition and sat there, at the steering wheel, laughing wildly.
It seems that Shinigami still has a place here after all.
