The Piece of An Unsolved Puzzle
I seem to be stuck trying to write simple, touching stories today. Maybe I need to stop listening to the History of Trunks soundtrack.
Disclaimer: If I owned Dragon Ball, I think I wouldn't be on this site.
The bright scrap of red cloth caught his eye, fluttering on the tree branch rather simply. The child looked at it, cocking his head slightly to the side in confusion, wondering how such a small piece of material could be in the tree, much less why there was even such a cloth out here at all. At that moment, a small breeze caught the cloth and dislodged it from the branch, sending it dancing off into the air. He went after it, something in his mind telling him to fetch it. Just before the breeze landed it in the water, he got it, a small smile spreading across his face. That smile soon faded though, as he tried to once again figure out what exactly this little scrappy red cloth could possibly be. He turned it over in his hands, getting no sense of what exactly it had been. It wasn't torn or anything, so it couldn't be a piece of clothing; yet at the same time, it wasn't any clothing he'd ever seen.
"Goku, where have you gone off to now?" The child immediately picked up the voice of his beloved grandpa, Gohan. He hurried off to meet up with the wise old man who had taken care of him since he'd found him. It was a story Goku had begged his grandpa to tell him many times, one he never failed to enjoy- and one he never failed to puzzle over. Who was he really? Where was he from? Why did he have a tail?
"I'm right here grandpa. And look what I found!" He excitedly held out the red cloth, while the older martial artist looked it over. Moments earlier it'd seemed mysterious; however, now it just seemed like a limp, somewhat dirty piece of scrap material that was of no importance whatsoever.
"Where'd you find this, Goku?" As always, Gohan was interested in the findings of the child. It wasn't unnatural- he cared a lot for him.
"It was hanging on a tree, then the wind caught it." Gohan just nodded slightly. It somehow seemed familiar, yet he didn't know why. He shook that thought away.
"Well, keep it. Maybe it'll bring you luck or something." Goku grinned, before looking at it again. Then, strangely, he tied it around his head, brushing his bangs back over it after he'd gotten it tied. It looked nearly natural like that.
"Look grandpa, I'm a karate expert!" Goku did a few martial arts moves while Gohan chuckled, shaking his head.
"You never fail to amuse me, Goku. Come on- it's nearly lunch time."
"YIPPEE!" The child practically flew back in the direction of their small home, Gohan following, although only after surveying the area shortly. The cloth had not been torn from any clothes, that was certain. So just where had it come from? He figured he'd never know. Maybe it didn't mean anything; on the other hand, maybe it meant a lot. He just couldn't figure out for sure.
Okay, so this was supposed to be a lot more, but I thought it was an interesting idea. After all, in the Bardock: Father of Goku movie, we do see Bardock's headband drifting through space. So, I thought, what if it somehow ended up on Earth and Goku found it? My idea sort of failed, but I still wanted to write this. Oh well.
