"I'll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and your choices, son
One and the same, I must isolate you
Isolate and save you from yourself…"

It had been three weeks since they'd come to the mountains, and Kyo's condition hadn't changed. Kazuma had been hopeful; it seemed to him that getting Kyo away from others and from the city, from anything remotely familiar, would help him.

They were staying in a small, one-roomed house that belonged to one of Kazuma's friends, who now barely used it. It was located miles outside of the nearest town, nicely secluded. It was just the two of them here, and Kazuma was prepared to stay as long as necessary.

Which appeared to be what would become a very long.

Kyo was not getting better, it seemed. All day long, unless Kazuma told him to do something, he'd sit silently, staring at the floor. And, anything he was asked to do, he did almost mechanically, not putting any heart into it.

Kazuma rarely, if ever, left Kyo's side. He was scared, so scared, that the one moment he turned his back….

Kyo, before they had come here, had always found his own way of punishing himself for doing something wrong, be it not allowing himself to have sweets, or forcing himself to train longer hours.

And now, finger's had been twitching, in a restless sort of way; twitching and picking at his clothing, at the floor, almost as though in search of something.

From what he had gathered from the very little Kyo had told him, Kazuma had discovered that Kyo felt responsible for someone's death. How this was even possible, Kazuma couldn't imagine, but he didn't pressure Kyo to tell him. He was sure that would only drive Kyo further into his depression. Instead, he just stayed with Kyo, keeping an eye on him, as well as keeping him far from anything that might be used to hurt himself.

Because, from the way his fingers kept looking for something, and from his silent depression, Kazuma was afraid Kyo might find a way to hurt himself, to punish himself, if given the chance.

Just a quick little fic. Hope you enjoyed it!
