Once upon a time there was a mother duck who had been sitting on a clutch of eggs for some time. When the time came for the eggs to hatch, six ducklings broke out of six of the seven eggs. The mother duck was a little puzzled at the seventh egg, for it was much bigger than the others and she couldn't remember laying it.
Still, before she could give it any further thought, the egg hatched, and a strange duckling with feathers of grey rather than yellow came out.
"Who's the mother duck?" asked Gambit.
Magda.
"Who's Magda?" asked Rogue.
"That would be Pietro's and my mother," Wanda said tersely.
The grey-feathered duckling, Evan, was often teased by his siblings. The only time they played with him was when they were picking on him. Pietro, in particular, took great delight in calling him ugly all the time.
"Yeah, that's right," said Pietro. "You're much too hideous to be a part of this family."
"Good," Evan retorted hotly. "I wouldn't want to be."
One day, Evan ran away from home. He went around, asking everyone he came across if they'd seen any other ducklings that looking like him, but their response was always the same:
"No, we've never seen any ducklings as ugly as you."
"Evan's an ugly duckling!" Pietro hooted.
"Umm," Kitty spoke up, "you are aware how this story ends, right?"
"So?"
"Ugh, nevermind."
It happened one day that Evan came across the home of a countrywoman, Ororo, who mistook the duckling for a goose. Ororo was very excited about her find, and hoped that Evan was a girl goose and lay lots of eggs.
"I did what now?" Storm asked with a frown.
"See that?" Pietro said smugly to Evan. "Your own Aunt thinks you're a girl."
Evan rolled his eyes.
"I know it's just a story, Auntie 'Ro," Evan said.
But although Ororo stuffed Evan with lots of food, he couldn't lay any eggs. Ororo started getting very disappointed with the lack of results, and her cat, Mystique, started teasing Evan and threatening to eat him.
So, one day, Evan ran away again.
"Always running away from your troubles," said Pietro.
"Why are you still talking?" Evan demanded. "Your scenes are over."
One morning at sunrise, Evan happened to look up and he saw a flight of beautiful white birds flying south for the winter. He wished that he could be that beautiful, even just for a day.
Winter came, and Evan began to freeze. Fortunately, a farmer, Charles, happened to find him, and he gave him to his children to look after.
"Who's his children?" asked Evan.
Umm, Kitty, Kurt and Rogue.
"Aww," Kitty said, taking the liberty of hugging Rogue and Kurt.
Evan stayed with the farmer and his family all winter, but by the time spring arrived, Evan had grown so big, that Charles decided he should let Evan go free by the pond.
On the day that Evan was set free, he happened to catch a look at his reflection in the surface of the pond. He was quite amazed at just how big he had grown. He didn't even recognise himself.
"It's the bone armour," Evan joked.
Kitty giggled.
Then Evan saw the swans returning north. It was then that he realised he looked just like them and he quickly sought to make friends.
"Hello," said Callisto. "You're a swan, just like us. Where have you been hiding?"
"It's a long story," Evan replied.
And so Evan swam majestically with his fellow swans. One day, he heard children on the riverbank say "Look at that young swan! He's the finest of them all!" and he almost burst with happiness.
The End.
"I like how the swans turned out to be the Morlocks," said Kitty. "That was cool."
Pietro made a rude noise.
"You care to repeat that, pretty boy?" Callisto asked Pietro darkly.
"Uhh, no?" Pietro replied.
