I wait in the rain but I don't complain because I wait for you.
Always You | Ingrid Michaelson
The swing creaked as she sat upon it. Not because the swing was actually for child but due to the fact it was rusty, not oiled and old. As soon as she walked out of precinct, it had started to rain, like a cruel joke. Oh Kate, she thought, your life is complete shit. She wanted to laugh (it was too soon), she wanted to cry (that felt right), she wanted to scream (what the hell would that solve?) The rain continued to make its presence known as it fell down all around her. She didn't care - not today.
She tried to pump and kick as she sat on the swing but she had already expended enough energy today. A little while ago, she resigned from the NYPD, the one thing in her life that always made complete and utter sense. She threw her badge on the desk and chuckled when she did. She didn't think she would have the balls to actually do it but it was the right thing to do.
She was more angry because she waited for Castle and he didn't come. She heard his voice yelling her name. She knew he'd find her. As she dangled from that ledge, she knew she had the power to wait, he was coming. Except he didn't. (But he always rescued her.)
She kept reflecting as she stayed on her swing. She looked over to his swing, the swing where she opened up to Castle. He would know what to say. He always did. Tears formed in her eyes; at first she dismissed it as rain but she knew better. She could taste the salt.
Everything she worked for was gone - just like that.
Who was she without her badge, her work and her partner?
His voice wouldn't leave her head. She wanted to be angry about his most recent confession of love during their argument of her mother's case, she wanted to be angry about the unwanted protection and she wanted to be angry about the door shutting behind him. But what she really wanted was Castle to be there, just like the last four years.
She was on the verge of tears when he walked away. It was the end of them. Again. This time seemed permanent.
She laughed when she realized she had actually grown up. Love. Partnership. It's not always easy but you find the way to make it work.
She gathered her thoughts and got off the swing. She pulled her cell phone out and called Castle. She knew he wouldn't answer. She wouldn't back down.
She walked to his apartment with sheer determination. She wouldn't be stopped. She knocked on the door and there he stood. She could see the hurt and anger in his eyes. "Beckett, what do you want?"
"You." She stepped up, took his face in her hands and kissed him.
Always. You. She repeated to herself.
Always.
