Summary: What was really going on in the Doctor's mind when the Ponds invited him for Christmas dinner? One-shot
Author: mastermindofthecosmos
Disclaimer: If I owned Doctor Who and the characters, we probably would have gotten another series of the Doctor and Amy travelling and giggling around the universe, but clearly that has not happened and I unfortunately don't own Doctor Who either.
Author's Note: Hi guys! This is my first story on here, so if I made an mistakes or anything, don't be shy to comment. Rate and/or review if you wish as always and don't worry, Amy won't spray water on you if you don't :)
"We are about to have Christmas dinner. Joining us?"
"If it's no trouble?"
"There's a place set for you."
"But you didn't know I was coming, why would-"
"Oh, because we always do."
The first sense the Doctor got was shock, which immediately turned into a deep, warm feeling that he couldn't quite point out. The fact that the Ponds set up a place for him for Christmas, every Christmas, he didn't know if he should be overjoyed or miserable about how much he affected their lives. The Doctor was indeed selfish and wished to have a companion when travelling to adore him and impress them with clever insight, but the Ponds were a whole different story. Rory died a few times thanks to him, which ultimately deeply hurt one of his close friends, Amelia Pond. The girl who waited. All those times she looked up to him and trusted him with all his life, he just couldn't be that hero to her. She gave him all the faith she had in the world, and all he did was steal her childhood away. He always knows that when he brings a companion aboard the TARDIS, he steals a portion of their life and sometimes leads them by the hand to their death, exactly what happened with Rory and not only once.
Even though all of his companions weren't the most smartest, clever or imaginative, he never imagined that he would consider a few humans equal to him rather then looking at them as flesh who live in their glorious planet that he saved from destruction multiple times. After all, he was apparently the last time lord, smartest then all the geniuses, the most cunning and charming, but he considered every single companion equal to him. In fact, he always let them stay longer then they should have, which always end up making him feel more heartbroken or their lives completely miserable after their adventures.
So as soon as he heard Amy Pond, his Amelia Pond who has waited for him ever since that day he dropped from the sky, have a place for him for Christmas dinner with Rory, he felt as if he belonged. Belonged and not forgotten after all the pain he has caused to the Ponds. After many years of travelling and having adventures with the absolutely brilliant companions, he was able to sit down, in the home of those he truly card about in the world he save multiple times and feel as if he was part of the word instead of a supreme being of sorts.
With all that going through his mind, still standing by the door of the Ponds, he couldn't help but be overcome with humany-wumany feelings: tears of joy that he finally had a place he could come to and stay, a place that would remind him of all the times he had with the Ponds without feeling dreadful for what he has done. As the humany-wumany tears fell and the snow still slightly falling onto the street where the carolers are heard from a distance, he was able to call this place home rather then saving it for the millionth time.
