Through the Mask
Sudden warmth. He had turned around right into someone's kiss, a kiss he felt through his mask, one that made a jolt run through his spine. He stepped back.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING!" He turned scarlet despite his wishes and glared at her wide innocent grin.
"I had to." She was still smiling. "I'm proving to Kurenai that boys don't have cooties." Sure enough, there was Kurenai, giggling hysterically and blushing sympathetically at him. He turned back to his attacker.
"Well I'm not the only boy in the world! You could have kissed anyone! Why me?!"
"You're too serious." She put her hands on her hips. "I thought I could lighten you up some." Her mischievous eyes flashed. "Guess not." She turned around, ponytail flicking. "Come on, Kurenai. Let's go find someone fun before lunch break is over." He blinked at their retreating backs. Someone snickered. He turned back to Obito who was laughing openly now while Rin collected the contents of his dropped lunch tray.
"Nice one, bro!"
Today had been horrible. Obito had teased him non-stop, sensei's comfort speech had not been successful, and all the girls had chorused "Bye Kakashi-kun" when he had left for the compound. He was ready to go to sleep right now, even though he hadn't eaten dinner. Obito would be at dinner. He sighed heavily as he reached his room. He could hear sensei speaking sternly about too much dish soap shortly followed by breaking ceramics and a soft paternal groan. He opened his door and escaped from the scene before someone came for the broom. As the door slid shut, he sensed a presence. She was sitting cross-legged on his bed, eyes happily squinted, the same innocent, broad smile on her wide face.
"What are you doing here?" he begged hysterically. Why wouldn't this girl leave him alone? That's all he wanted, to be alone.
" I came to apologize. I guess I really embarrassed you. I didn't mean to. I'm sorry." He didn't care.
'That's nice." He crossed his arms and turned away. He heard her heave off the bed, then her approaching footsteps, and turned right into her slap. She glowered.
"You people are all the same. One thing goes wrong and you think you're the only person who's sad, the only person who hurts." He was touching his face where she'd hit him. It stung. He blinked in shock at her. "Well I've got news: you're not the only person with feelings, good-bye!" She stalked towards the door, past him, and as she reached for the handle, he grabbed her wrist. She spun in fury right into his kiss. A soft and tentative one, one that made her turn scarlet.
"I'm sorry."
"Well, yeah." She looked down. He hadn't let go of her wrist. "You should be." His eyes wrinkled merrily.
"I know. That's why I said sorry." He suddenly became serious. "We're friends now, right?" She blinked, still blushing.
"Yeah, I guess. Sure." He smiled again.
"Good. Why don't you stay for dinner? It's always very exciting." Puzzled, she let him lead her from the room into the loud and bustling hall. His sensei turned from a cornered Obito, brushing yellow hair from his eyes. He smiled brightly, and slightly teasingly.
"Who's you're friend, Kakashi?" Then to her, "Will you be staying for the meal, madame, or are you just stopping by?"
"She's my friend. She can eat with us?!? Really!!!?"
"Yes, really."
"Kakashi has a girlfriend, Kakashi has a girlfriend!" Obito ignored his sensei's reprimanding glance as he followed him into the kitchen. Anko stuck out her tongue, but Kakashi smiled. The only part that mattered to him was 'friend'.
