I do not own the Legend of Korra

Blood that was all he could see that was in front of him. No, not his blood, but her blood. Her blood caked his hands and face as he kept trying to put it back into her body. He knew he could never be able to put her blood back into her, but he was desperate. The woman who he loved was dying right in front of him, and he didn't know what to do. Why did she do it? Why did she try to save him and fight the man? Why couldn't he stop her? These questions kept popping in and out of the man's head, why didn't he just tell her to stay home?

"Korra, don't leave me, you stay right here!" The man told her, caressing her face. The woman looked up at him, smiling weakly.

"M-Mako" she says quietly. Mako looks at her tearfully and hugs his dying wife.

"You have to stay; you have to, think about Ardea and how she needs her mother, and just don't leave me." He tells her, crying into her hair. "Please, Korra, help is on its way, I promise!"

"Mako…" she whispers again. "Tell Ardea that I love her." She tells him.

"No, Korra, don't close your eyes, stay with me; listen to the sound of my voice!" He screams. Then, Katara comes and tries to heal her, but to no avail. She gives Mako a sorrowful look and shakes her head. Mako breaks down and cries, he hugs his wife's dead body and refuses to part from her, he refuses.

What if he told her to stay home?

Would it be different?

Would he be the one dead and Korra the one crying?

Mako bolted straight up from the bed and breathes heavily. Cold sweat prickles down his face and he looks around.

It could have been so different. He thinks as he looks at his wife's sleeping form. She stirs quietly and wakes up.

"Mako, you okay?" She asks as she sits up. He nods and hugs her.

"It could have been so different, Korra!" He tells her, tears coming out from his eyes. Korra rubs his back and kisses his cheek. "You could've died, because I was so careless!"

"I could've Mako, but I didn't, and that's all that matters right now." She tells him soothingly. "I know it's scary, Mako, but you have to remind yourself it is just a bad dream." She whispers.

"But-"

"No buts, City Boy, I'm safe and so is the baby." She tells him, letting him feel the tiny bump that was just beginning to show.

"I love you so much, Korra, and I just don't want anything to happen to you, or this baby." He tells her. She smiles and kisses him.

"I love you too."

It could've been so different, she could be in a grave along with their unborn child, and he could've been at home with Ardea. But, it didn't end like that, Korra was with him and so was their unborn child who was getting stronger and stronger each day.
