His phone buzzed, but the sound wasn't enough to wake him. The noise was becoming more continuous. He slowly lifted his head as the sound began to ring in his ears. He lifted his right hand and ran it through his short hair, a habit he had gotten in to when the tips reached his shoulders. He took a moment to adjust to his surroundings, the stacks of books casting shadows in to the hallway, the gentle sway of the curtains as the breeze rolled through the cracked open window. Spencer slowly lifted his phone and saw he had five missed calls: Morgan, Garcia JJ and Ashley. Ashley. Two were from her. He smiled to himself and pressed redial.
"Hey, Reid, you okay?"
"Hi, um, yeah thanks, you?"
His voice was rough since he had nothing to lubricate it since the previous night.
"Yes. We all just got worried about why you're so late to work..."
Reid pulled his watch off the bedside table and saw that Seaver was right, its was 1:30 pm.
"I must of overslept, I'll be in soon!"
"Don't worry about it, Hotch is letting us go early, we've all done or cases, just like you."
"Oh, okay."
"see you tomorrow Reid."
And with that the call ended. Reid's head flew back and hit the pillow once again. His hand rubbed over his face, taking the stretching the last of his facial muscles. He couldn't believe he had over slept that bad. He swivelled out of bed in one swift motion and walked towards his coffee machine.
His mind cast back to the night that himself, Morgan, Ashley and Garcia had gone to see a movie. He smiled as he remembered the four of them walking in a line down the alley with Morgan there to 'protect' them all. He unconsciously stroked his left arm, reminiscing in how it brushed against Ashley's own that night.
He was brought back by the beeping of the coffee machine.
He chewed his lip as he sat down with his cell and coffee. A large internal debate happening. He wanted so desperately to have the guts to ask her out, or spend more time with her outside of work, but like his usual self decided against it. He did send one message though.
'Hey man, fancy going to see a movie or something later?'
He slid his device onto the table and remembered the look the two of them shared as Garcia did some more of her flirting with Morgan, as usual. The vibrating cell on the wood caused him to sigh, loudly.
'Yeah kid, that sounds great. Are the girls coming with? ;)'
'I'll message them now.'
'OK! I'll ring Garcia.'
Reid took that idea as a very good one, and set his phone to dial Ashley, for the second time that morning.
"Hey, Ashley. Morgan and I are thinking of heading to the movies later, would you want to join?"
He could feel his hands becoming increasingly sweaty.
"Urm, Reid I kinda have a date tonight otherwise I'd love to..."
"Oh, never mind, I hope you have a good time"
The words didn't even sound true.
"Thanks, it would be nice to meet a guy who actually think I'm nice to be with..."
"Ashley, you are gorgeous, any guy would be stupid to turn you down!"
"Thanks Reid, I'll see you at work tomorrow."
"Wait! Would you like to go to dinner with me sometime?"
"I'm sorry Reid, I wouldn't be able to do that. We're just friends, I can't let you be more than that. Bye."
With that the phone went dead...
Spencer Reid took the final rejection he could. He threw his phone on to the table and mentally swore away from ever being hurt again. Especially from a women.
