If they wanted to, they could stand there forever waiting in Temari's doorway. But forever was a long time and much was expected from them both.

"Stay," it's supposed to be a demand but it comes out all wrong and she feels exposed and weak. "Stay with me."

He shakes his head, "I can't." He turns to the window. Temari follows his gaze and sees him.

He stands on a nearby rooftop, his hair dancing in the wind and even from here she can see the white of his eyes glowing under the pale moonlight. He's the most beautiful man she has ever seen and she hates him.

"He's waiting for me." And that means more then anything Shikamaru has ever said to her.

"So am I."

He faces her again and he almost looks regretful. "I told you"

---

"I told you Shikamaru of the leaf, I always get what I want." Then Temari's hand, against its will, scratched the back of her head.

"Women are so troublesome." Shikamaru withdrew his shadow and turned away. "I don't know why you try so hard," he looked over his shoulder, "I'll only disappoint you in the end."

Temari only smirked because she thought she had won.

---

Everything she ever had with Shikamaru always felt like a piece of glass existed between them. She could see and hear him but she couldn't feel him. She reaches out to him and half expects to hit something solid instead she is met with a strong jaw and warm flesh.

---

"Most girls are looking for a man that would romance them with poems and flowers, pulling out chairs and opening doors."

"I'm not like most girls." She replied and he smiled.

"I'm no hero Temari, and the first chance I get I'm running away."

Temari laughed because she thought he was joking.

---

She needed something tangible to hold onto but he always slips through her fingers. He sometimes reminded her of the shadows he manipulates. She feels his presence he's almost here but not quite.

---

"Do you love me, Shikamaru?" Because if you never asked he'd never tell.

He smirked. "Almost"

Temari frowned because she knew it was the truth.

---

For Temari, almost was never good enough but this time she can't let go.

He's already crouching on the window sill and like always, he slips through her fingers.

"Coward," she whispers into the night. She isn't sure who she is referring to anymore.

He didn't even say goodbye.
