Fanfic based on Ann Ryand's novel Anthem. It was a English assignment, but I liked it so much that I thought to post it. Liberty 5-300's point of view when she first meet Equality.
K+ rating for Safety... Read and Review?
Seventeen and a month that is our age, we do not like being this age. It means that we should be ready to bear children. It will happen to us in one more years' time. The children are just going to be taken from us, to be taken away and raised in the house of infants. We will not miss our children, it is forbidden to get attached.
Today we meet them, we were getting water to drink. We drank the water from the moat with no remorse, since we were not supposed to. We couldn't move and only looked up and water fell from our hand. We got up and walked over to him. We call him The Unconquered, for reasons only for us to know. We didn't tell him this just yet.
We've saw him before, we didn't smile. We didn't know what to think about them, so we remain cold. We walked alone back to our jobs. Then we smiled at him and soon waved to us, and we wave back. This is when we gave him the name The Unconquered. It is wrong for us to give them names but we have.
Today, they spoke to us. It is a rule not to speak to us, but The Unconquered speaks to us anyway. The others with him marched forward, not looking back. Then they spoke:
"You are beautiful Liberty 5-3000."
How did they know our name? We didn't move, not wanting for them to be right. Only our cold eyes grew wide at the sound of the name. It was so… angelic to be heard from their mouth. Then we burned with curiosity ourselves. We have given him a name, but not said his real name.
"What is your name?" we asked curiosity burning in our head. We were careful not to let him know that we were curious. Triumph ran through us, we were bold enough to ask.
"Equality 7-2521," they answered.
"You are not one of our brothers, Equality 7-2521, for we do not wish you to be." We spoke the truth. We do not want him to be our brother. We want him to be something more to us.
He paused for a moment and then meet our eyes. They had just beautiful eyes, they were so different to us.
"No," they said, "nor are you one of our sisters."
So they felt the same way, but why? They must have seen the others; they were old enough to mate. They must have been there twice already.
"If you see us among scores of women, will you look upon us?"
"We shall look upon you, Liberty 5-3000, if we see you among all the women of the earth," they said leaving us to our thoughts for a moment.
"Are the street sweeps sent to different part of the City or do they always work in the same places?" we desired to know this information. We wanted to see them again. When they answered our heart practically jumped.
"They always work in the same places," they answered, "and no one will take this road away from us." This was such fantastic news. We meet eyes when words slipped out of our mouths before we could even think of them.
"Your eyes, are not like the eyes of any among men." Foolish we didn't want to say that. Then they surprised us by asking the next question.
"How old are you?" they asked we lowered our eyes unsure what to say next. They must think that we are young. Aye we are, but we answered honestly.
"Seventeen."
We stood there still cold, but we worshiped him from afar. We started to smile a sad smile as we thought of the first time we would walk into the house of mating. My three sisters with Honor 1-362 leading them, finally came. So we left, our heart soaring.
