I ran into an old friend today and had a nice talk about some sweet memories over cake. When he left, I felt a bit melancholic. So, this is for him and anyone else who loves/misses a close friend.
Kanda slurped up his soba noodles daintily, ignoring the skin-burning stare he was victim to from the person sitting across the table. His eyes were closed in an attempt to block out the image of the person resting his head against the table childishly, but this action had no effect. He opened his eyes and met that piercing green orb. It blinked a few times before Kanda finally lost his temper and placed the bowl onto the table harshly. He took a quick sip of his tea before saying, "Okay, what do you want? If it's money you want, you better pay up the money you already owe me."
"Nah, I don't want money," Lavi replied, waving that threat away. "I was just looking..." He started staring again. Kanda gave him a bemused look before blinking and returning back to his meal. He decided to look at the food he was eating in order to avoid being caught in those deep eyes.
"Hey, Kanda," Lavi said not even a minute after going silent. "Do you remember when we were little kids? We used to hang out with each other all the time back then." Kanda unconsciously smirked. He finished his noodles and placed the bowl back onto the tray before lacing his fingers together and laying his chin on them.
"I remember perfectly," he replied. Lavi grinned. If Kanda would have forgotten, he would have to beat it into him. Lavi wasn't one to forget anything, no matter how trivial it seemed to anyone else.
"Yeah, those were some great times." Lavi sat up and his grin somehow managed to get bigger. "Do you remember when we first met?" Kanda laughed.
"Yeah, unfortunately." He shot Lavi a dirty look. "You threw me into the river."
"Hey! I told you to think fast!" Lavi said defensively. "But you didn't listen to me. You just stood there."
"I didn't think someone as stupid as you looked was actually serious about pushing me in," Kanda said bitterly. "If you actually showed some intelligence in that ugly mug of yours, I wouldn't still hold a grudge against you." Lavi grinned and laughed from his throat.
"Hey, do you remember that time I was getting picked on bullies?" he said with a fond tone. "We were around eight years old."
"That was fun." Kanda took a sip of his tea again and cleared an itch in the back of his throat. "That was the first time I killed someone."
"You seriously killed him?"
"Almost." Kanda smirked. "But I did beat him to a pulp."
"Thanks for that, by the way. I'm not sure if I said it."
"Whatever." Kanda closed his eyes and sighed deeply.
"I miss being a kid," Lavi said. "We were carefree and happy, and we didn't even give a thought to akuma back then. Now, that's all we have time for."
"Yeah," Kanda said. "I miss those days as well."
"Lavi! Kanda!"
Both men turned around to see their awkwardly-nice conversation cut short by Lenalee. She rushed over to them, panting, and said, "Komui wants to see you two. You guys have a mission together."
"Damn it, really?" Kanda growled. "I dealt with this guy all through lunch, and now I have to go on a mission with him? Komui better be wearing protection, or I'm going to gut him thoroughly."
"What? Come on, Yu, you know you love me."
"Do not call me that!"
