"James,"

"Hold on, Lils, I'm about to win!"

"James."

"I haven't won Wizard's Chess against Padfoot in years-"

"JAMES POTTER, YOU GET HERE RIGHT NOW!"

A loud clattering sound came from the other room and James soon appeared at the doorway to his and Lily's bedroom, hair ruffled and looking as though he had just been through a duel. He had his wand out and was scanning the bedroom for intruders. Sirius soon tumbled behind him, knocking into James and almost sending them both to the floor in their haste.

"Ow! What the-"

"Lils, what's wrong?" James asked, now confused, straightening his glasses and slowly putting his wand back in his robes pocket, realizing there was no danger. Lily tapped her foot impatiently, watching the whole debacle and waiting for it to settle down.

Remus showed up just as she held out a little white stick that had one word "yes" inscribed in a little rectangle on it. James and Sirius stared at it blankly, completely nonplussed. But Remus' eyes widened, and he comprehended the situation immediately. He tugged Padfoot from the room forcefully, and Lily and James could hear his protests before the front door slammed.

"James. I'm pregnant."

The words were simple, but the effect was profound. James gaped, mouth open and looking a bit like a baboon in that moment. Lily would have laughed had the situation not been so dire. She was a mess of nerves, mixed with excitement and dread. They hadn't discussed having a child. What would James say? Was he ready to be a father?

Suddenly, she was crushed in a bone-breaking hug and his hard, warm lips crashed against hers with so much passion Lily forgot to breathe. Then she melted into him and all of her worries disapparated away. They would be fine. They would be just fine.
