Long Distance Call
Julie was always so greatly attached to her grandmother. And her grandmother was also greatly attached to her. So much so, that her grandmother called Julie her own, treated her like she was her own, and acted like she was her own.
But one day, Her grandmother died. No one knows why for sure. When Julie's mother and father where paying a visit, they rang the doorbell and her grandmother shouted, "Coming dearies!"
And a large thump was heard and Julie's father practically rammed down the door and found Julie's grandmother still and silent at the end of the stairwell. She looked as if she panted herself, lied down, and died. A few feet in front of her there was a small package addressed, "To: Julie, With Love, Grandma,"
But little did they know that Julie's grandmother's spirit was inside that package, in a way that the most brilliant man could not unfold.
Weeks after her grandmother's funeral, Julie finally opened her present. It was a toy telephone. Being at the age of 7, this was a very appealing gift to Julie. Ever since she opened the package, she could not stop playing with it. She would talk for hours on end with no one at all, well, at least that's what her parents thought.
When Julie was having another conversation, Julie's mother decided she had enough. She walked into Julie's room and found her talking on the phone on her bed. "Julie, I called Laura's mom. She wants you to spend the night. Get the sleeping bag from your closet and I'll pack the rest," Said Julie's mother.
Julie covered the talking end of the phone and said, "In a minute mom, I'm talking to Grandma!"
Julie's mother was so very worried, considering that Julie thought that she was talking to her recently deceased Grandmother.
When everything was set for Laura's house, Julie's mother peeked into the room to see if Julie was still talking on the phone. Sure enough she was. Julie's eyes where in a strait stare as she replied into the phone, "Yes, Grandmother," in a trance-like voice. Julie hung up the phone and ran out the front door.
Her mother assumed it was Laura's mother's car that was honking outside, but when she heard the slam and a car screeching to a stop, she made a different assumption.
Julie's mother ran down the hospital hallway with the toy telephone in her hand. All she could hear was the deep beating of her heart. Then, Julie's mother stopped, looked at the phone, and spoke into it, "Mom? Can you hear me? If you can, can you please, please bring my daughter back? She means just as much to you as to me. She can't see you just yet," and she hung up.
When she saw the room Julie was in, the guy that hit Julie was outside the room. She grabbed him by the shirt and screamed, " HOW COULD YOU?! HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF I HIT YOUR KID?! THEN WOULD WE BE EVEN?!"
The guy said, "Hey, the girl ran into the street, with red eyes on her face, and I couldn't stop in time! What am I supposed to do?"
The guy continued, but all Julie's mother's eyes where on was her scraped-up bruised little girl, opening her eyes again. Julie's mother immediately ran into the room, gave her daughter a kiss and said, "Why did you run into the street, Jewels?"
"Grandma told me she wanted to be with me." Julie said in a faint voice.
A week later, Julie got released from the hospital, and her and her father where in the attic. "And that's the last we'll see of you," he said to the telephone. Julie's father put the telephone on a high shelf then Julie and her father returned to the second floor. But something is telling me inside that that wasn't her Grandmother's last call.
