"W-Why?" I asked, shakily. I felt tears streaming down my face, but I didn't care.

"Eli, you're just suffocating me," Clare said, crying herself. I took a step towards her, but she backed away.

"What is going on, Clare?" I asked. She started shaking from crying and looked me in the eyes.

"I just need some space. I need some time to think. I gave you time," She said.

"You made a promise, Clare. You said you would never leave me. What happened?" I screamed at her. She flopped down on the bench and put her head in her hands.

"It's Fitz," Clare said after a long silence.

"What about him?" I asked, looking her in the eyes. I clenched my jaw to hold back all the things I could have screamed at her.

"He showed up at my house a couple weeks ago," She said, looking down. I saw a few tears fall down and hit the sidewalk. "Eli," She said my name as if she was asking for help. I took the spot next to her.

"What did he do to you?" I asked.

"I need a break, Eli. I need to sort out my thoughts. I'll be fine," She said, in the least convincing voice ever.

"What did he do to you?" I repeated, needing an answer. Clare looked down, twirling her ring around her finger. I clenched my hands into fists in anger at Fitz.

"Nothing," She mumbled, taking the ring off her finger and throwing it on the ground.

"Clare," I said, grabbing her hand and rubbing the bare spot where her purity ring used to be. "What did he do to you?" I asked again, pretty sure of the answer.

"I'm a terrible person, Eli," She said, rubbing her foot against the ground, crushing her ring. "I don't deserve this ring. I'm not pure anymore."

"Did you want to?" I asked.

"Of course not, Eli. I love you," She said, putting her head onto my chest and crying. "I said no, over and over again. He didn't stop and... and..." She sobbed.

"I'll give you time," I said. She looked up at me and new tears filled the rim of her eyes.

The tears poured over the edge when she said, "I'm pregnant, Eli."
