Between Two Texts

Rin's texts were becoming shorter, yet more frequent.

Riki frowned, but he could do nothing but send texts in return. Rin needed him. He needed her. But they were schools apart and unless they could come up with a good reason to get Rin back here, there was nothing else to be done. They'd thrown about options. Convince the other students that she was more a bother than a help. They thought that anyway, apparently, and that only made it harder for Rin, forced to stay. They thought about trying to get her kicked out of there, but Kyousuke caught on to that plan a little too quickly for their liking. They thought about running away but they were too scared. It was too easy, and yet too hard.

And yet, one evening, Riki got a text from her. "I'm coming," she said.

And he knew that she'd chosen that path after all.

But how long would it last. Would Kyousuke send her back? Would the school send her back? Would it be enough to convince everyone that she couldn't stay there, that she wouldn't? Or would nothing change after all?

His fingers itched to send a text but it wouldn't do any good. He just had to wait until she texted him again. And hope something would come of it.

The phone beeped in his hands. "Riki… I'm outside."

His fingers flew across the pad in a feverish haste as he answered: "I'm coming."
