Believe In My Spirit
A/N:Inspired by the episode,"Hero In The Hold" after Brennan sees and speaks to Teddy Parker at the gravesite and Booth tells her about Teddy's spirit helping him escape the boat. Set after End In The Beginning. What happens when Brennan sees the spirit of her mother?
Temperance sighed and ran her hand through her shoulder length, auburn hair. She stared tiredly at Booth's sleeping form as she'd been doing every day since his surgery and every day since he woke up and didn't remember her. She wasn't going to give up on him. After all,he was her best friend and if she was in this position,Seeley Booth would never abandon her.
"Temperance?" A soft, familiar voice---one she hadn't heard in years asked.
She froze. She knew that voice. The musical voice that could only belong to one person which didn't make sense since this person was dead.
"Temperance. Sweetheart, look at me." The voice pleaded.
She felt a cool palm on her bare shoulder and she turned around, swallowing hard. She turned around only to come face to face with a woman with brown hair and soft, gentle eyes. Christine Brennan. Her mother. "Mom?" She whispered, wondering how this was even possible. She watched her mother walk over to the other side of Booth's bed and sit down. The wedding ring she wore, gleaming on her finger.
"Hello Temperance." The lilting voice of her mother said as she smiled at her daughter. "I've been watching over you for years now. You've made me so proud. Your so smart. Just like your father. And your protective and independent. Just like him." She smiled again. "Your father...he's right that you look like me but...your so much stronger. And I've watched you with your friend here. It's obvious that he cares about you a great deal. And you for him."
Brennan looked away. She had to be hallucinating. Her mother was dead. Had been for years. She couldn't just magically appear infront of her.
"Listen. I know....that when your father and I left...it hurt you a great deal. We shouldn't have done it,but we did it for you and Russ. To protect you from our enemies. " Pain filled Christine's eyes. "It's obvious it's harmed you more than I thought. Because of your family, your afraid to love again. But Tempe I am here to tell you that Booth...he won't hurt you. He loves you and you love him and all I have ever wanted----all Max has ever wanted,is for you to find love with a good man. And this man---he's it." She let her hand touch Booth's head for a moment before pulling it back to her side.
"He doesn't even remember me." Brennan said in a mere whisper.
Christine laughed as she watched Booth, going unnoticed by Temperance, begin to wake up. "I wouldn't be sure about that." She murmured, watching as the man's warm, reassuring brown eyes settled on her daughter with recognition.
"Bones?" He asked,throat parched.
Brennan froze in her seat in shock making her mother laugh. "Get him some water Temperance." She said.
Brennan nodded and poured a cup shakily, handing it to Booth.
He sipped at the water briefly before meeting his partner and best friend's eyes.
Temperance met her mother's eyes with tears of happiness. "I love you mom." She whispered as she felt a barely there kiss on her cheek as her mother's form disappeared from sight. She didn't know how it happened or why but Temperance Brennan felt that she'd just experienced a miracle.
