Alfred Jones (Usa)/Dianne Kirkland (FemAus) pairing

She sat waiting impatiently by the large window. In the distance, she could hear the pestering sound of the old grandfather clock that lay forever in the foyer. Each tick pierced through the silence in a painful way as she waited nervously for any news. She sat straight in the large chair, her long brown hair draped gently over her shoulders. Although she appeared young, her pale blue eyes were filled with wisdom, sadness, and worry.

It had been months since she had heard any news of them. Each paralyzing second that the grandfather clock announced made it even more painful to endure. She wished for their existence to be known; wished she could send news in return. But nothing she wished for seemed to come true these days.

A small envelope sat on the end table next to her. She picked it up and read through it once more, taking in everything about it. Devouring every sentence. Savoring every word. Now, it was all she had left to remind her of what had been. Oh, if only more news would come. Another letter. That horrible yellow telegram. Any kind of news would be better than sitting here waiting and wondering.

She looked from the letter to the window once more. For the first time in months, something was different. A small vehicle was quickly galloping up the driveway. Her heart pounded anxiously when she realized it was not the usual mail truck. No. This machine, was a military truck. She sprang to her feet, filled with an overwhelming joy and a paralyzing terror in the same instant. Sprinting out the door as fast as she could, all she could think to do was pray and be thankful.

The vehicle came to a stop and a blonde climbed out. She slowed as she approached the soldier, terrified for the news that might come along. The soldier's bag was dropped just outside the door of the machine before it quickly sped away. Her heart shattered and fell in thousands of pieces to the floor. No. It couldn't be. They were BOTH supposed to return.

Smiling sadly, the soldier picked the heavy bag up and began walking towards her.

No. This was wrong. Where was the other? Where was the twin? Why weren't they both returning? She was too terrified to ask, but needed to know.

"Sarah...Where's Alfred?"
