The Brigadier walked swiftly through UNIT headquarters towards the Doctor's lab.
He had just recieved word from Geneva about some suspicious sightings of a large 'monster' in Manchester, and he wanted to check it out.
As he passed through several corridors, and several officers, he started to become more and more suspicous.

There was no one around. The place was empty, deserted. He'd only left for a few minutes, and the place was full to the brim then.
He quickened his pace, and headed towards the main office, where calls from the regular army were received.
Seeing that place deserted, he started to panic- but kept his cool. He was in the army, after all. And they didn't call it the British 'stiff upper-lip' for nothing.

Still, he ran through several scenarios through his mind. From least to most severity.
The Daleks maybe teleported the staff to the future, or some other Timelord sent them to another universe.

He decided that the best hope was to check the Doctor's lab, and so he ran there as fast as he could, and burst open the door.
The Doctor and his current 'assistant', if she could be called that- Sarah Jane Smith, were no where to be found.

His suspicions were further raised- and he had even more questions- when he saw the Doctor's equipment was actually put away for once.
It meant he wasn't in the lab, however, his TARDIS still stood in the corner of the room, as blue and imposing as ever.

He'd been inside it, once, and it had certainly shocked him when the Doctor's words of 'it's bigger on the inside!' were confirmed.
That had been a strange day though, even for UNIT.
Thinking of that day caused him to reminisce over all the things they had been through. Even though the Doctor would sometimes act like a spoiled child, and he had felt like an impatient father, they had grown to be good friends.

He looked closer at the TARDIS, and noticed a slight gap in the door.

"That man... He always gets uppity when we don't transport this box with 'enough care', yet he goes and leaves the door open so anybody or anything could get in."

He put his arm out to the door to shut it, when curiousity overcome him. He pushed open the door slowly, and went inside.

Strangely the lights were all out, and the place was deathly silent.

"Doctor? Miss Smith, are you there?"

In the darkness, he was sure he heard something scuffling along the floor.
He put his hand on the handle of his pistol, and prepared himself for the worst.

"Who's there? I'll give you till the count of three. One..."

He squinted towards the noises.

"Two..."

"SURPRISE!" came the giant yell, as the lights filled the console room and everyone from UNIT jumped out of their hiding places.

The Brigadier stood in shock at the amount of people in the room.
Some doors opened at the back, and even more people came through, carrying a giant cake with 'Brigadier' written on it in blue icing.

The Doctor walked up to the Brigadier- now showing no evidence of having a 'stiff upper-lip'- and shook his hand.
"Happy Birthday, my dear chap. I hope you like Eldamorphian Frosting. It's from the planet Eldamorphisis, where most of the general population are chefs."

"Really?"

"No, of course not! Sarah got it from a local supermarket. Planet Eldamorphisis, honestly!"

The Brigadier shook his head, but was still smiling.

"Honestly, Doctor. Thank you for this. I didn't tell anyone it was my birthday. How did you know?"

"You think I wasn't going to know my best friend's birthday? I found out long before I decided to join UNIT."

The Doctor smiled, and the Brigadier smiled back, before taking a slice of birthday cake and joining the celebration.
