Lily woke early, and James was still snoring softly. She smiled at his calm features, and his arched eyebrows. She briefly wondered what he was dreaming of. She felt a tug at her gut but disregarded it, she'd felt mildly sick over the last week.
She stood up and suddenly her world swirled around her. She barely had time to run to the bathroom before she emptied the contents of her stomach into the toilet bowl. Soft footsteps told her of James's approach.
"Lily?" he asked, concerned.
"I'm fine," she said. She stood up a little shakily, flushed, and opened the door. James's hair was even more ruffled than usual, if that was even possible. She watched him with a smile as he stumbled towards his glasses. He put them on, blinked, then smiled at his wife.
"Shall we get some breakfast?" he asked her.
"Yes," said Lily, suddenly realizing she was viciously hungry.
"Pancakes?"
"With vinegar. And cucumbers. Oh, and some baked potatoes would be nice too."
"Are vinegar-cucumber pancakes a Muggle dish?" he asked, concerned at her peculiar taste in breakfast foods.
"No... I've never had it... But wouldn't it be delicious?" said Lily.
"If you say so," he said, having long ago decided to stop trying to understand Muggle things, like fire hydrants. Or mailboxes, which really baffled him.
They sat down to breakfast and Lily devoured her pancakes and vinegar cucumbers. James tried what she was eating, and almost retched, but faked an expression on delight when her green gaze turned his way. "Got any more?" asked Lily.
James briefly wondered whether she'd been Confunded before going to the kitchen and making another rather large stack of pancakes. James watched with increasing worry as she chomped through four stacks of pancakes. She was eating like it was her last meal.
"What?" she demanded angrily, seeing James watching her. She finally stopped eating and James decided to try his luck.
"Not to be critical, love, but... haven't you been eating... differently today?" he asked.
"Have I?" she asked. "Merlin, you're right. Just two weeks ago I couldn't finish one stack of pancakes."
James looked at her. He was starting to understand.
"And I've been sick... and having mood swings," Lily went on. "You do know what this means, James?"
"You have spattergroit."
"Yes I - what?" she asked, confused.
"Spattergroit. A terrible affliction of the skin. The first symptoms are fatigue, indigestion, feelings of anger..."
"James, I'm pregnant."
"Pregnant with spattergroit? That baby's going to be seriously messed up..." James moaned.
"No," she said, now sounding annoyed. "I'm only pregnant. No spattergroit."
"But the symptoms - "
"Are symptoms of normal pregnancy. James, we're going to have a baby!" she said, her eyes shining. "Can you believe it? A little James!"
"Or a little Lily," said James.
"That'd be better. Honestly, if the poor thing has a head anywhere as big a yours, I don't know how I'm going to give birth."
James rolled his eyes. "I know one of me is hardly enough, this world needs another James."
"Either way, I'm teaching the baby to not be conceited," said Lily firmly.
"And I'm teaching the baby Quidditch. The next greatest Seeker is yet to be born!" said James.
Lily's stomach gave another lurch. "And... I'm going to be sick," she said, running from the table looking slightly green. James stayed there looking out dreamily.
"It'll be a boy..." he said, almost to himself. Because sometimes, there are things people simply know. There are inexplicable coincidences. There are some things that even magic can't explain.
