28 Little Red Letters
Chapter I – Fire
"I love you
I want you
You're the one that I live for
And I can't take it any more
I love you
I need you
What can I do to make you see
You're the only one for me"
~I Love You, Faith Evans
Roxas was the type of kid who went through life without sparing a second glance (or though) about anyone (or thing) that did not immediately catch his eye. So when he came to school on February first to find the building decorated from top to bottom in the usual gaudy pink and red of the month, he didn't give it any thought. When he found the daily notes and whatnot from his friends stacked high on his desk, he merely took them to his locker for safe keeping until the end of the day. However, Roxas did give the tiny red card that fluttered out of his locker when he went to shove his things into it a second, third, and fourth glance, because tied to that card was not a box of chocolates, a ring, or a teddy bear, but a tiny black plastic crown keychain instead.
"Roxas! Hey, Roxas" Hayner ran through the halls, shoving and bumping into people in his hurry to catch up to his friend. His normally heavily gelled hair was left flat for the day and it swung into his eyes was he stopped, blinding him and making him run face first into the blonde he'd been chasing. "What's the rush, man? Trying to avoid us?" He pointed over his shoulder to their lagging group (or lack thereof seeing as it was only Pence and Olette) and slapped Roxas on the back. Roxas coughed.
"Oh! No, nothing like that…I guess I just kind of zoned out." Roxas rubbed his neck sheepishly. "Sorry."
Olette smacked him playfully on the shoulder and grinned. "Yeah you better be sorry!" The friends laughed at Olette's attempt at being stern before returning to the previous conversation.
"Zoned out about what?" Pence crossed his arms over his chest. "You've been acting like a zombie all day."
Roxas groaned and scratched at his arm. "I've just been trying to figure out who gave me this." He rummaged through his pockets and pulled out the keychain he'd received this morning. "You guys were the only ones who knew I wanted it, but it didn't come with a name so I figured it wasn't from any of you."
All three looked away nervously. Hayner cleared his throat. "Truth is man, it isn't from any of us." Roxas opened his mouth to interject and Hayner cut him off, "And yes all three of us know who it's from…But none of us are going to tell you until they do."
Roxas whined. "Come on guys!"
"No."
So Roxas went home that night confused and frustrated and from the time he finished his homework to the time he fell asleep, he couldn't stop looking at the keychain and its little red letter.
