Prologue – Recall

Ianto cleaned the coffee machine for what seemed like the seventh time that day, not that it needed doing, and it wasn't like there was anything else to do. Today was excruciatingly dull, unusual for Torchwood, but there was just nothing happening, the Rift was deathly silent (which, according to Jack, happened occasionally). It looked as if Gwen was on the verge of dropping off at her desk, and Jack had been flicking through various files all week, searching for possible replacements for Tosh and Owen, so far he was unsuccessful. Suddenly Ianto's phone rang loudly, breaking through the stifling silence. As soon as he picked up the phone and read the message, he spoke.

"Jack? Gwen? I think I've just solved our problems."

Adie jumped out of her life, then stared, infuriated, at her phone. Setting the soldering iron upright and reached across the now ruined circuit boarding she'd been working on, she picked up her phone, ready to call and yell at whoever had disturbed her. Then she froze and she read the message, unsure of what to think.

His patience wearing thin now, Jason pinched the bridge of his nose; he really hated Doctors with superiority complexes. Especially the Doctor who was talking to him know, bragging about how he'd saved the life of six people with bullet wounds once, Jason had heard this story millions of times before, but this Doctor seemed to enjoy re-telling the story in immense detail at every chance he got.

"Of course I stopped the bleeding with nothing but my bare ha-"

"Sorry, but I've really got to tend to Mrs Johnson." He said forcefully, smiling to the frail old woman in the hospital bed, she smiled back.

"Right you are James! I'll see you later then!" the Doctor strutted away

"It's Jason..." he muttered in annoyance, before turning back to Mrs Johnson

"He doesn't half go on a bit doesn't he?" she said matter-of-factly

Jason laughed lightly "How are you feeling today?" he asked

"All the better for seeing you sweetheart." She said, allowing him to take her wrist and measure her pulse. Just as he went to check, he remembered he hadn't put it on this morning.

"You won't tell anyone if I get my phone out will you?" he asked her, already knowing that she wouldn't, she smiled and winked at him. Jason pulled his phone out, he had two messages. One from someone he hadn't seen or heard from in ages, the other didn't even have a sending number, not even a 'Withheld'.

Daniel strutted down the street, bag of chips in hand, and a mouthful of them. His phone rang in his top pocket. Shifting the bag of chips into his left hand and wiping his right on his jeans, he took the phone out of his pocket, scanning his eyes over the screen. There was one text from a non-specified number and an incoming call from an unrecognised number.

"Hello?" he asked, forcing the last of the chips in his mouth down his throat.

"You just got a text didn't you?" said the voice of a young welsh woman.

"Adie?" he asked "Well, I'll be damned! How-"

"I'm fine." She snapped "But you just got a text didn't you, the number wasn't displayed."

"Um..." he thought about it, had there been a number? "'Fink so..." he muttered

"It's from The System" she said, making Daniel stop in his tracks "We're being recalled."
