Firefly Dreams
Her name is Victoria Winters. She came to Collinwood not long ago to be a governess to David Collins, son of Roger Collins, and nephew of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, mistress of the large house. She sat in the drawing room attempting to complete an extremely mind boggling crossword puzzle, that had been bothering her for a while. She just couldn't think of a four letter word for obvious. She wished the answer was obvious to her at that moment.
It was storming, lighting flashing across the sky, lighting it up as if someone had turned the outside light on. Thunder boomed through the halls of the house, shaking the more unstable walls in the old and deserted part of the house. Her eyes were becoming heavier and heavier by the minute, and she could barely stay awake. She had to sit up last night, all night, with David because of a nightmare he had. He just couldn't, or wouldn't, go back to sleep, so Vicki had to force herself to stay awake.
Victoria's eyes slowly closed, and the newspaper containing the crossword puzzle went limp in one hand, as did the pen in the other. Her head slipped back to rest on the back of the sofa, as she fell into a deep sleep.
Collinwood was a place where anything could happen anywhere, including your dreams. Vicki had come to believe this over time, after having a few dreams that no one could explain, not even the professionals. She was beginning a dream now, and even though she didn't know it at that point, this would be another one which she wouldn't be able to explain.
Walking down the sidewalks, Vicki was bundled up, as if it were winter and it were snowing, when in fact the trees were green with life and fireflies darted around, lighting up the dense darkness with the lights on their tails. For some reason she felt as if she were late for something, like she had to be somewhere. Of course! She had a tea time set with Barnabas at the new café called France, which was to be said with a heavy French accent. Her mouth was as dry as death, and she would relish the taste of tea in her mouth.
Vicki entered the small café, and spotted Barnabas sitting in a corner table, shrouded by darkness in the shadows. The tea had already been served, along with a basket of breadsticks. Vicki sat and sipped her tea, feeling the moist liquid flow into her mouth. Nothing was said between her and Barnabas, and an instant after she had taken her first sip of tea, she found herself in a small clothing shop, with an uncontrollable urge to by shoes. Lots and lots of shoes.
She walked around, her eyes quickly darting from one shoe to the other. She hadn't brought any money with her, which made her feel sad, but upon stuffing her hands in her coat pockets, she found bundles of cash in them, which made her perk right up. She bought running shoes, swimming shoes, relaxing shoes, shopping shoes, and even a new brand that were croquet shoes.
Vicki was so happy with her purchasing, that nothing, not even a handsome knight in shining armor who would come to sweep her off her feet, would make her happier. She pranced down the street in her red and blue croquet shoes, with a smile spread wide across her face.
Then, Vicki woke up. She stretched her arms and legs out, putting the newspaper and pen aside. She stood up and walked around. 'Something's different,' she thought to herself. Looking down, Vicki noticed the red and blue shoes she had bought in her dream. They were real, and on her feet. A knock on the drawing room door and the turning of Vicki's head found Burke Devlin, the man she was currently romancing with, standing in the doorway. "I hope you like them," he said with a smile.
