Title: Maintaining destiny

Summary: Destiny couldn't be changed and he had always known it was to end this way

Pairing: Mention of one-sided Sasu/Naru

Disclaimer: Obviously I don't own anything to do with Naruto, nor do I own Merlin. No money is being made from the writing of this fic, my sole purpose is to write to entertain. No copyright infringement is intended.

Author's Note: (Please Read) – A very short drabble. A different take on Sasuke's reasons for leaving, and the finality of his return. Inspired by two lines in the new series of Merlin, which made me think what if Sasuke had known what would to come to pass and what if his reason for leaving wasn't all it appeared to be.

Please review, I know it's very short but would be interested to know what everyone thinks. As usual flames and CC accepted.

Enjoy,

He had always known that it would end this way. From the first moment he had set foot inside the doors of the ninja academy, to his silent walk through the night as he left. He admitted though, he found it ironical that his travels had taken him all over the world and yet it was here in Konoha where he would finally fall to his fate. It was the one thing he truly had never expected. He had known how he would die, but he had presumed, as so many had before him, that he would fall far from the place he once called home, not in its centre.

Red splattered the ground from a previous assault, but as he looked up into the cold blue orbs of the Hokage in front of him, he found even now he could not resent this man. His destiny was always to love him and to die at his hands. His heart's desire even now. Naruto.

'Is there any last thing you want to say, traitor?' blue orbs flashed in undisputed anger.

'If you continue down this path young one, you will find what comes to pass will change all of Konoha's future, not just your own. You are destined to continue on this journey and you and I both know it will be to protect Konoha and not for revenge. Yet it will not be your brother or the Sannin who will decide your fate. Your fate lies with that of your heart's desire. You cannot escape the path that is destined to be woven between you two. He is your destiny and he is your doom.'

Onyx eyes closed, a flash of pain crossing the pitch black depths as the raven haired man remembered what he had been told long ago, back when he was too young to have properly understood it. He knew that what he had been told could not be put into words now to save him, and he didn't want to try. His reason for living had long since taken his destined path, and such a path could not be shared by the two. Naruto had always been his heart's destiny, and his body's doom.

Opening his orbs once more, his gaze subtly tracked that of the man who had changed so much and retained so little. Before he croaked in a voice that had long since been used 'A traitor is not always that which it appears'.

Sharp murmurs from the crowd, the stony gazes of Iruka, Sakura, the rest of the rookie nine and the disappointed look by Kakashi followed by the angry snarl and terrifying flash of blue red orbs was the last thing his gaze took in. Before the sharp flash of burning pain erupted through his chest.

'No, Sasuke', blazing blue orbs locked onto his pain filled onyx as Naruto crouched to his level, 'a traitor is always a traitor'

Coughing wearily and spraying blood over his robe, onyx orbs met blue once more and he murmured,

'One day I hope you will see the truth'.

Weary onyx orbs closed and the once proud Uchiha appeared to sigh in relief before toppling forward to come to rest on the dirt track beneath him. Blood pooling in an ironical fan shape around his torso.

Destiny had once again been maintained.
