Timeheart

Nita Callahan pushed the shifter of her beat-up Honda into first, sliding easily onto the southbound freeway, finally homeward bound from an eventful winter break. Beside her, Kit picked absentmindedly at what remained of the seat cover, drumming his fingers on his knee.

His best friend and partner in wizardry took one hand off the wheel to smack him gently on the shoulder.

"Don't pick at it, dummy," she scolded gently, wincing as the engine yowled at her.

Kit shifted for her, rolling his eyes.

"Learn how to drive, dummy," he mocked teasingly.

Not taking her eyes off the road, she smacked him again. "You be quiet. Who was the one who got in trouble from Miss Steinfield for running over her trashcan? Huh?"

Kit slouched back in his seat with a defeated sigh. The memory of the ill-tempered elderly lady repeatedly whacking his car door with her cane was evidently too painful to bear.

"It wasn't on purpose," he muttered defensively.

"But you still ran over them, didn't you? Your car got a real beating from her…"

"Ha. Ha. Ha."

The headlights cast a dim glow on the road as the Civic cruised down the highway, a light rain starting to descend on the Maine freeway.

Kit yawned widely. "And we didn't transporthome because…"

Nita sighed and didn't reply, though a faint blush rose to her cheeks.

Her friend grinned. "Ah. I see. Very insightful, you are," he laughed.

Nita went a fetching shade of red and wordlessly concentrated on the road ahead.

Silence reigned in the cabin for a while, then, Kit very gently touched Nita's free hand. He smiled faintly as she took it in hers, giving it a gentle squeeze as she did so.

A pair of white lights cut through the windshield, horribly conspicuous in the sea of red that lay before them.

Nita's heart caught in her throat.

Half a scream ripped from her throat as she yanked the wheel hard to the right, desperately trying to avoid the oncoming vehicle.

There was a squeal of rubber, then a huge, sickening impact that threw them in their seats. A loud shriek of tortured metal cut through the air, then, another jolt, harder this time.

Darkness descended mercifully upon them as another impact struck.

A/N: Hey guys,I know it's been forever... I'm sorry... between school, what goes on in school, and a trip to Washington DC... it's just been really hectic. I'm going to update (wow) and finish Napa Valley Weekend... this month. Possibly expect something for Middle Earth Chaos... either this month or next. Thanks... hehe, tell me what you think of this.
