"Well," she sounded uncharacteristically shy, "what do you think?"
Kuki Sanban was clad in her favorite trainers, black leggings, and oversized green sweater, but there was certainly something different about her. It was her hair. The girl's classic hairstyle had been altered. The long, raven tresses were not so lengthy anymore. Kuki's glossy hair, bangs and all, was now styled in an asymmetrical bob. The shortest strands fell to her chin, and the longest piece nearly reached her shoulders.
The girl's new look was not voluntary. Earlier that morning, Sector V had engaged in a rather typical mission. Stickybeard and his crew were stealing candy, and it was up to the Kids Next Door to put a stop to it. Unfortunately, the pirates had been particularly adept when using their gum cannons that day, and Kuki found herself with multiple wads of the sticky, pink substance in her hair. When the mission ended, Abby and Kuki tried everything they could think of to remove the gum, like peanut butter and ice, but nothing worked. Ultimately, Abby revealed a pair of scissors and set to work on her friend's hair.
Presently, Numbuh 3 stood before Numbuh 4, self-consciously fingering the dark fringe of her hair. The insecurity was unfounded. Wally always thought Kuki looked... well, lovely, he admitted to himself. He never said as much aloud, though; however, the way she was apprehensively twisting and tugging at her mane tugged at his heartstrings, and he wanted to reassure her.
Tentatively, he reached out and wove his fingers into a stray, soft lock of hair and then pushed it behind her ear. He only struggled a little bit to get the words out, but it was worth it because her nervousness fell away and her lips pulled into a familiar smile that never failed to make his heart thud noticeably in his chest. "It looks good, Numbuh 3."
