Harry had just returned from his walk in the Forbidden Forest. It was the 7th anniversary of Dumbledore's death, and he had just been to visit his late headmaster's grave. Harry was now a 23 year old auror and husband to Ginny Weasley, well Potter now, and she was going to have a baby in less than two months.
As much as Harry was looking forward to being a father, he had to admit that he was scared. He had, of course, looked after Teddy from time to time, so he had had some practise, but he knew that being an actual father would be much different. He stared at the first of the summer leaves strewn on the floor of the forest as he walked, thinking about how his life had changed in the last 6 years, and how much more it was going to change in the next few months.
As he reached the edge of the forest, he could see his good friend Hagrid sat outside his hut peeling potatoes with Buckbeak sat contentedly next to him. As Harry approached, Hagrid gave him a cheery wave, and beamed at him. Harry hurriedly bowed to the hippogriff; who returned the bow somewhat tiredly.
"Hullo, 'Arry!" Hagrid greeted him, standing up and scattering potatoes everywhere. His enormous hand grasped Harry's and it was all Harry could do to stop crying out in pain. He helped Hagrid to retrieve the stray potatoes, and sat down on the ground beside him.
"Yeh look troubled, 'Arry. 'Ave yeh bin teh visit Dumbledore's grave? Went down meself earlier. Great man, he was." Hagrid stopped.
"Yeah, I have been down there. That man helped me so much." Harry replied, a bit subdued. He looked up at Hagrid's concerned face. "How you keeping then, Hagrid?"
"Me? I'm great, 'Arry. Yer gonna be a dad soon. Yer'll be great; I've always known yeh'd be a great father."
"I'm a bit scared though Hagrid. What if I'm a terrible dad? What if I don't know what to do? What if it..."
"Harry, stop yer worrying. Yer'll be great, I've jus' tol' yeh tha'. Don' worry, it'll be yer instinct. All yeh need to do is help Ginny as much as yeh can, an' get up in the nigh' so she can rest, an' feed the child an' put it teh bed an' stuff. Yeh thought o' any names yet?" Harry looked at Hagrid gratefully; he could always cheer him up and make him feel better. Hagrid was his first friend in the wizarding world, and apart from Ron and Hermione, he was the greatest friend he ever knew.
"We were thinking James Sirius for a boy or Lily Luna for a girl. Ginny's really excited, but it causes her so much pain too, I'm worried about her. This is the longest I've left her for two months; I should be getting back now." He rose and looked Hagrid in the face. "Thanks Hagrid, you've helped alot."
"Any time, any time. Yeh look after yerself and Ginny now mind. Let me know when there's news!" Harry once again had his hand grasped vigorously by Hagrid before walking out of the Hogwarts grounds to apparate home.
1 and a ½ months later...
Dear Hagrid.
Ginny had the baby last night, I can't tell you how proud of her and our son I am – yes, it's a boy! We've named him James Sirius as planned. Hope you're keeping well. We wondered if you wanted to come and visit later, and also if you would consider being godfather – we couldn't think of a better man for the job. We're still in St Mungo's, but we're going home tomorrow. Ginny's exhausted, so if you want to come, this afternoon would be great. Thanks for all the advice; you've been so great and helpful.
From Harry.
Hagrid's eyes leaked with happiness as he read this letter. Harry and Ginny wanted him to be godfather! He was so happy and proud. He couldn't believe how lucky he was to have found a friend like this in Harry. It was 3 o clock now, so Hagrid tidied up after himself and apparated to St Mungo's hospital to meet his new godson.
