What to do when a person likes you and you like her too but you can't stay with her?
There are many questions in the universe, but currently that was the question that don't leave the Doctor's head.
Their pink and yellow girl liked him very much, but it was a bit complicated start a relationship with a human. Humans are born, grow, reproduce and die, the Doctor had more than 900 years old and was already in his tenth regeneration. He could live for many years, it was difficult to find someone to share a life, he had seen so many loved ones leave him that sometimes wondered if this was some kind of curse.

He just couldn't stand to see Rose die.
An hour she would go away, have a life with someone and die happy. So will have someone to grow old in her side, it certainly wouldn't be him, but it would be enough. He just wanted to see your pink and yellow girl happy.
"How long are you going to stay with me?"
"Forever"
