A/N: There are many characters in the Silmarillion that are mentioned, but some never have their stories told in full. Ilmarë, the chief of the Maiar along with Eönwë, is one of those. Here I give my personal vision of the untold Maiar. And if the writing seems a bit strange or out of place, please do excuse me, this is the first time I've been able to write about something Tolkien related in months.
Disclaimer: I do not, or ever will, own the Silmarillion or anything else that Tolkien ever wrote.
Do you see that star, blazing across the heavens, seeming to fall from its place in the sky? That is Ilmarë, maid of the stars, handmaiden of Varda the Fair. Do you see how it runs across the sky with great speed? That is Ilmarë, dancing from star to star.
Ilmarë the immortal and beautiful, ancient among the Maiar, descended to this Earth with Varda. And when Varda set the stars into the sky, Luinil and Lumbar, Nénar and Carnil, among many thousands more, she called for her handmaiden to be their caretaker.
And Ilmarë ascended to Ilmen. Her hair was as the shadows of darkness in the night sky, and her dress was of shimmering white, as though woven out of the rays of the stars and a long train of light followed her. She seemed akin to Varda's creations.
There she passes her life, rarely descending from the heights of the sky to Aman, and then only at the utmost need. She delights in her craft; she dances to and fro, with astonishing speed, traveling between the stars. Moving from one to the next, singing wordless songs and laughing all the while, she replenishes their light; and they shine brighter than ever before.
So now, when you see that beautiful light darting across the sky, think of Ilmarë, dancing among the stars.
A/N: I understand some people may ask the question: How is Ilmarë chief among the Maiar if she hardly comes to Middle-earth? I don't know either. But Professor Tolkien, well, actually Christopher Tolkien, did state that the word 'Ilmarë' had the element of 'star' in it. And 'Ilmen' (the region of space where the stars are located), 'Ilmarin' (meaning 'mansion of the high airs'), and 'Ilmarë' all resemble each other with the root word of 'ilm.'
Anyway, reviews would be nice, constructive criticism is even better, but all flames will be donated to the nearest Balrog Rehabilitation Center.
