Cosette was tired She had done nothing but play with her children all day. And she had only just gotten them all to bed. Finally she could sleep.
"Tired, my dear?" Her husband asked upon entering their room.
"Exhausted." She yawned.
"Yes I saw you playing with them earlier. I remember when Reza was this age…"
Cosette got off the bed and hugged Nadir. He hadn't told her much about his first son. Only that Reza was the only child rom his first marriage and that he had died young. Too young.
"I would liked to have known him." She said softly.
"You were barely walking when Reza died, love." He replied. It was true. Nadir, at 54, was Cosette's senior by 28 years were Reza still alive he would be 30.
However, Nadir wasn't the only one of the pair that had lost a loved one. Aside from her mother and adoptive father, Cosette's first husband, Marius, had died of typhoid a year into their marriage.
Cosette truly did not know what she would've done had she not met Nadir. Marius' grandfather had been very ill and had left Cosette the bulk of his fortune. She would not starve, but she knew almost no one. One night she had been out later and she ran into some…trouble. Nadir had show up moments later and saved her. He took her back to the Pontmercy Manor and asked if he could call her the next day. Obviously, the answer had been yes.
Contrary to her last relationship which had been triggered by love on first sight, their love blossomed over the course of the next year. The following one, they had become engaged, and six months later they were married.
"Come on, time to sleep." Nadir kissed her cheek and they both settled in bed.
Just as sleep was about to overcome Cosette, there was a knock on the door.
"Come in," She said groggily. The door opened to reveal their five-year-old son.
"Mama, the storm scared me." Before Cosette could ask 'what storm?' there was a crash of thunder and the boy, Jean, jumped onto the bed. The couple chuckled and made room for their son in between them. Not more than five minutes had passed when their other two children, Gabrielle and Mina, were in the room.
"Did the storm scare you too?" Nadir asked. The girls nodded. Cosette motioned for them to come onto the bed. Mina, being the youngest at three, curled up next to her mother while Gabrielle was very content to settle beside her father.
"Goodnight everyone." Nadir said.
"Goodnight Papa." His family chorused, except for Jean who was fast asleep. Before letting slumber enthrall her that night, Cosette couldn't help but think how very lucky she was. She was no longer alone.
Her loving gaze erred, pausing on each of the five faces surrounding her.
I have my family, she resolved, pleased with the knowledge that tomorrow, she would wake up to the very same sight
