Nightmares
"Listen to my heartbeat. Just focus on that, okay?" As he ran his hands over my hair, my breathing began to steady as I listened to the constant drum of his heart.
It was the third nightmare I'd had that week. They were all the same. Phoenix had just broken the hold he had over me by killing me and then bringing me back. But that wasn't the part that had me screaming late in the night.
By killing me, Phoenix had broken my connection with Lincoln. I remember waking up and screaming then too. I had died. Lincoln was lost. Trapped in his own body. That was the memory I was now softly crying about.
Since then, I had rescued Lincoln's soul and we had reconnected, but that didn't mean I didn't fear something similar happening again.
My tears began to slow as sleep once again overtook me. Just before I drifted off, I heard Lincoln murmur into my hair.
"Rest. I've got you. I always have."
