Watching Her Chapter 1
Numair Salmalin stood at the rail of the boat, looking over the side at the waters of Carthak. He closed his eyes breathing the salty air. Could he face Ozorne again after all these years? He was his best friend once. But now is he his enemy? He gripped the rail, knuckles turning white. Opening them he heard a light musical voice next to him.
"Are you alright?" Daine asked squinting up into his face. "Is something wrong?" Her eyes looking worried, staring at his hands.
"No, magelet. And I am as well as may be expected. I can't say which prospect makes me more apprehensive-that of meeting old enemies, or old friends." Numair replied sadly, staring at nothing.
"Old enemies, surely?" Daine asked, with a hint of understanding in her voice.
Numair took a breath. "I don't know. I was very different then. And you know the wise men say-'Only birds can return to old nests.'
He shook his head and turned to her. Numair towered over Daine. He couldn't help but smile. Gods she looks beautiful. "Mithros bless, you look very pretty." Daine blushed crimson. While she looked away Numair inwardly gaped at her. She was waering a blue dress tunic, nice breeches, and polished boots. The sapphire eardrops he gave her for Midwinter complimented her eyes. Her smoky brown tumbling curls cupped her face, they were tied back with a blue ribbon.
With a faint color of red still on her cheeks she asked shyly, "You really think so? I know I don't hold a candle to Alanna, or the queen-"
Numair smiled. He went on a rant about how the Lioness and the queen were their own kind of beauty. "Queen Thayet is astoundingly attractive, it's true, but you have your own-"Numair thought for a second, "something."
It was then Lady Alanna came into their talk. For a while they laughed, joked, and talked. Numair had a lot on his mind about Ozorne. His eyes wandered around the harbor, it wasn't until drums sounded that he was brought back to the real world.
Some one called orders and everyone was assembling themselves.
