The Waiting
He blows the dust off the freshly sanded wood. Running his hand over the hard surface, he finds another small imperfection and picks the paper covered block back up again. Starting to sand again he reminds himself to always go with the grain.
The peace that he has found before in this activity has yet to show up during this session. Until today, his life has been strangely peaceful even after the major changes that had occurred several months ago. He had never imagined letting himself start down the path that has led to this point.
It is his entire fault he realizes. He could have tried harder to resist her. He could have said no when he first felt her soft lips on his. He fell under the spell of her dark hair spread across his pillow that first night they were ever together. He had fought with all of his strength reminding himself of all the possible horrible outcomes, but he could not deny her siren call. He had eventually caved in, as most men do when faced with the same situation. He glances over in the direction of a bottle of bourbon he knows is beside the paint thinner. He decides he rather face this possible new situation with a sober mind. He begins to panic as he realizes that in the next few minutes his entire life could radically change again. Should he retire? Should he look for some other, safer line of work? Should she change jobs? Or would it kill her basic spirit if she was kept in a glass cage?
Before he can hyperventilate he hears the door to the basement open and shut. He keeps his eyes and hands on the wood in front of him as he listens to her walk up behind him.
"Well?" He asks still not turning around.
"Are you ready to be a Papa my husband?" She timidly asks.
Squeezing his eyes shut he lets a few happy tears leak out before he turns and grabs her in a huge hug and begins repeating, "I love you, I love you so much."
She begins squealing so loudly in happiness that the door opens again and several voices begin asking questions.
Finally he finishes kissing his wife and answers the people at the top of the stairs saying, "Gibbs are you ready to be the Godfather for Ziva DiNozzo's child?"
