Chapter 1: Market
"Victoria Grace! If you don't hurry up, we'll be leaving without you!"
Victoria "Tori" Grace Threester slipped on her shoes and ran to the door. At thirteen years of age, she was almost abnormally tall. Though she came from a very respectful family, she looked far from the part of wealthy Englishwoman. She was very tan, from running outside, and had unfashionably orange hair. But, like any other girl her age, she loved to go to the market with her favorite maid, Subira.
"I'm coming! I just have to find my bonnet!" she huffed. She hated her bonnet, but she knew her strict mother well enough to know she "will not, cannot" leave the house without her bonnet. She found the hat propped against her pillow, and she reluctantly put it on and ran downstairs.
There patiently stood Subira, the Swahili maid whom worked in the Threester house, and who had taken care of Victoria since she was born.
"Ready to go, Tori?" she asked her.
"Yes, please!"
The marketplace was very crowded that day. Subira had let Tori run about in a certain area, while she did the grocery shopping. Tori was looking at a certain stall, when she turned around to make sure Subira was still there, and she knocked into something knocking both down.
"Oh, I'm dreadfully sor-"
Tori was a bit taken aback when she saw whom she had accidentally knocked. He looked to be about her age, though he was very dirty and rather scrawny. His jet-black hair was matted, but his eyes shone out through the dirt.
"Completely my fault, Miss," he muttered quickly.
"Oi, you boy, drop that fan!" the shopkeeper cried from behind the counter.
He quickly threw Tori a look that cried, "Help me."
"Please, sir, do not punish this boy," she said, thinking quickly. "I had dropped the fan when we accidentally knocked into each other, and he was kindly giving it back."
'Come on, follow along' she thought.
The boy quickly handed her the fan.
"But," Tori continued, "I think I will buy it next week, when I have a bit more pocket money."
Tori then walked to a different stall, where the boy caught up with her.
"You saved my bum there, ma'am," he whispered.
"No problem," she whispered back, "just try to steal anything from him again."
"Deal."
"And your name is…" Tori inquired.
"Jack. Jack Rensington."
"Victoria Threester."
"Well, Victor-" Jack started.
"Please, call me Tori."
"Well, um, Tori," he stated awkwardly, "I best be off."
"It was a pleasure meeting you."
And then, he disappeared into the crowd.
Subira shouted out, "Tori? Tori, where have you gotten to?"
Tori frowned. Time to go home. Time for the most dreaded event of the day: Afternoon Tea with Aunt Elizabeth.
