A/N: Written for the Digimon Flash Bingo Drabbles, #272 – second chances.
practise what we preach
Everyone deserves a second chance, right? That's what we always say. Before we kill them and scatter their data on the wind.
Just because we're Chosen, we're given the right to be Gods? That doesn't sound fair at all, does it? Why us? Why not anyone else? We ask these things…and then we turn around and use that power without another thought. And then we cry because we've gone and killed a Digimon, taken away any chance they had at redemption.
How many Digimon have had the chance to turn around? Ogremon? Is that it? Digimon have to be either controlled or plain evil: is that the principal we always run along with? I doubt anyone's going to be arguing against us with Vamdemon – the guy came back from the dead to make the same mistake – but we've always fought to kill, haven't we? That's how we got Devimon in the end, and Etemon. And the Dark Masters. Sure they've killed a lot as well – or maybe Devimon hasn't; Angemon wasn't directly him after all.
How many times did we try talking to them, convincing them to turn away from their path? None…none at all. We just assumed they'd never change and killed...and then when we ran into humans that were the same, we gave them new chances. We let them go, hoped they'd change…and they did change. Ken, Oikawa: they changed. They're the same as the Digimon; why did they get second chances when the Digimon didn't?
No, that's not right. We gave BlackWarGreymon a second chance too, and he changed as well. But no-one else. Did we just know they'd never change, never become good? What about all those rampaging Digimon who worked for Vamdemon? It wasn't until we met Tailmon and Wizarmon that we even considered there could be an inkling of good deep inside. And then we went and slaughtered the Bakemon standing guard – Bakemon that were nothing more than mindless drones.
Didn't they deserve a second chance as well? A chance to redeem themselves, to live? Doesn't everyone?
