Timing: Order of the Phoenix
Pairing: Remus/Sirius
Summary: It's in those quiet moments, that the most is said.
Completed: July 17, 2007
Notes: After a very long hiatus from the fandom (about a year!), the movie brought me back. Pulled me back, more like it.
"Could you imagine it Moony?" Sirius began slipping out of his shirts and preparing to dress for bed, "Us raising a teenaged boy. James' teenaged boy." He stopped. Frozen with the thought in the quiet room, and sat heavily on the bed with creaking springs and joints.
"I'll confess, that thought scares me a little," Remus added from the doorway, with his usual resolve and dry humour.
They were so old now.
A pair of broken men – nothing at all like the youthful beings they once were. So full of life then. So full of possibilities and ideas, once. And this was not the future they had once seen for themselves. So much had changed, was lost – years, friends, even their will. How do you rebuild what time and prison take from you? How do you fill in those gaps?
And there were still so many questions to come, so many things unsettled and undefined. How do you start a family in a war? Too many what ifs and chances – the dark question of survival loomed over them all. Who would be left? What would the end bring?
But there were those beautiful possibilities that shone through, that would come with raising Harry. A future in new and different shapes and colours. The simpler things of everyday life. Although, what do either of them know about first dates and kissing girls now? And what is there left to teach a boy who stood against Voldemort? What use could these tired, old men be to him now?
They could, and would, take solace in watching Harry grow into the man both James and Lily would be overjoyed to see. Would be proud of. They could see him grow and age – more like his father, or his mother? They could watch him live.
Remus dropped himself down next to Sirius, the bed groaning under the added weight, "But it's also really exciting."
Sirius looked at him from the corner of his eye, the slow mischievous smile of his youth curling at his lips, "It is."
End.
