Disclaimer: Ouran belongs to that snazzy lady Bisco Hatori. No money is being made from this endeavour.
Best friends is not an adjective, but a verb Kyouya thinks. How else could he justify the things, stupid useless things, he does for Tamaki. Like starting the Host Club; which is more trouble than it's worth. Or learning to speak French fluently, to keep up with Tamaki's frantic mother-tongue ramblings. Or even disobeying his father in favour of traipsing after the blond on another mindless whim. Sacrifices he's made and all for what? A spontaneous, unnecessary, hug? A beaming smile that certainly doesn't send his heart a-flutter?
Or maybe he abandons his pride, common sense and iron-will for the nights that Tamaki winds down from his customary sugar high and falls asleep with his head resting on Kyouya's shoulder, hair all over his face. It isn't particularly comfortable or even appropriate, but Kyouya wouldn't trade his best friend in for all the notebooks in the world.
