Author's Note: When I thought of this, I was listening to Josh Turner's Must Be Doing Something Right and this picture just popped into my head. One-shot. Set after Father's Day.
The TARDIS was sitting in the middle of a random field in Russia. The Doctor had parked it there for the night, realizing Rose was human, and must be exhausted. She hadn't slept for days. He was currently fiddling with the TARDIS's inner workings on the main deck. He mindlessly tapped his fingers against the metal while he worked. Then he heard Rose scream. "Rose?! Rose!" He jumped up and dashed off, farther into the ship. He found Rose tangled in her blankets, screaming incoherently and thrashing. He rushed to her side, but couldn't wake her.
Rose was sure she was dreaming. Before her stood her father, with a furious look in his eyes. "It's all your fault, you know that, right?" Then he stepped backwards and the car hit him. Then, he was standing before her once more. "It's all your fault, you know that, right?" Then the car hit him again. On and on and on. She couldn't escape it. She could only stand there while her father died over and over right before her eyes. Then, faintly, she heard her name. "Rose?! Rose, can you hear me?!"
The Doctor was holding her down and calling her name over and over. His throat was sore when she finally woke up with a strangled gasp. He could tell she wasn't fully awake, her eyes were those of someone who was on the verge of falling into unconsciousness. "Rose, what happened? Are you all right?" The words tumbled out of his mouth, nearing incoherent. Rose blinked and looked at him. "I...I was dreaming, that's all. I'll be fine." She went to turn over and go back to sleep, but he wouldn't let her. "Rose. Tell me what happened." She looked at him again, eyes glistening with tears. "I...I can't." Then she started to cry. "How can I help?" he asked desperately, hating seeing her this broken. "It's all my fault he's dead," she sobbed. "I couldn't save him. It's all my fault!" He finally understood. He pulled her in for a hug, and rested his chin on the top of her head. "It's not your fault. Your father had already died, it was his destiny. You couldn't have changed it. It's not possible to do without destroying the world." She mumbled something he couldn't quite hear, but she started to calm down. After a while, she relaxed, asleep. He gently laid her back down and sat with his back against the wall, waiting to help her again if need be. He couldn't stand to see her suffer, he cared too much about her. Eventually, he found himself nodding off as well.
The next morning, Rose woke to find the Doctor sleeping against the wall. She wondered why he was there, but then the memory slowly came back. The dream. The Doctor waking her up; she must have been screaming. Then falling asleep again once she'd calmed down. He must have stayed. She smiled a little. She knew he cared about her, but it was nice to see it. She knew she'd do the same thing for him.
