Thoughts on Eternity: Observations from an Immortal Pirate Captain
On Continuity and Horizons
One hundred years is a long time. Long enough to observe the world the world you have known
gradually morph itself into something foreign and entirely new, yet to realise that nothing has truly
changed. The basic principles still apply; although the deck has been washed, the sails changed and
the wood of the ship painted, the foundations that allow her to ride the waves remain firmly in
place. People still endeavour arrange themselves into common groups, to find where their
allegiances lie in the universe, as it were. You'd think we would know better by now. We rum
soaked, unreliable scallywags that call ourselves pirates will, too, always exist, if not in all our
swashbuckling glory (for I fear our days as such are numbered) then at least in the survival of the
selfish-impulsive intent that so many revel in. We all continue to seek the promise of freedom that
lies just beyond that horizon, taunting us fools that will undertake the impossible- no, improbable-
journey to where the compass points. With an eternity at one's feet however, and the fastest ship in
the Caribbean, who's to say the horizon hasn't finally met her match.
A/N: The idea for what will be 'Thoughts on Eternity' actually came to me while thinking about another Pirates fanfic I am currently in the early stages of writing, which occurs approximately 100 years after the movies when Cpt. Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swann have both attained immortality, anyway, I wont go into details about the plot now, but while considering it, I started to think about the idea of living forever and the philosophies that would arise. This fic is the first in what will likely be a series of musings concerning the nature of immortality. Although this first edition isn't the best example, if you actually stop to consider it a it, if you attained immortality then with it would definitely come a different perspective on a number of issues and thoughts concerning the situation. Hopefully a lot more interesting than it sounds, though looking at it it probably needs improvement, these entries will get better though (and longer), I promise! Reviews are most welcome, constructive criticism etc., but please don't be too harsh (this is my first ever attempt at a fanfic), happy reading,
Cee
