Something I did when I was bored. I've decided I like it, even though it's short. Reviews are appreciated. :)
Night World ©L. J Smith
The first of the Perseids flashes across the sky.
She can't help it. Can't help but think of him.
So what?
It's just Ash. He needs time. She needs time. They've agreed to this.
Then why? Why is star-watching never the same for her any more? Why does her mind wanders off light years away, thinking of him? Why does it hurt every time she looks up at the sky, no matter how hard she tries to conceal it?
Soulmates. No big deal, right? She tries to ignore the meaning of the word. Soulmates. Soulmates. Soulmates. She remembers saying a word over and over again until it looses all meaning. But this word never loose meaning. Not to her. She tries ignoring the silver chord, too. But she knows, and she feels, that it's always there; the silver thread connecting them together.
He's her soulmate. It's simple as that. He's the one who should catch her when she falls, be there when she needs him, understand her in a way nobody else can, love her when she's stupid. He's her other half. He completes her.
Well. You had it your way. She thinks to herself. Sometimes she wishes that summer never happened. Then she would never need to feel what she feels now. She knows it's insane. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but she didn't know it was this hard.
All those times avoiding thinking about him, refusing to contact him or even tug the silver chord to see if he's on the other end. It wasn't because she didn't care. She cares too much that it hurts to even think about it. Because she wants him here right now, right here.
And yet this is the path she chooses. She needs time. He needs time.
So they will wait.
A single tear slides down her check as another brilliant flash sliced across the night sky.
He watches as the meteors flash across the sky.
And he thinks of her.
Mary-Lynnette. The girl he loves, his soulmate. The reason why he's doing all this—making up for his past, doing good deeds—the reason for him to change who he used to be.
It's nothing; really, they're just soulmates who are destined to be for each other. He tries to convince himself. She needs time. He needs time.
He never even believed in soulmates until he met her. He never asked for it. From the very fist moment he met her, he was completely drawn to her. She managed to pull out his heart, rub it, and put it back in. She didn't forget to kick him in the shin a few times so that he won't forget about. Then she sets him off for making amends for his past. More than he liked to admit, he was tamed, completely, by her. But all that doesn't matter, because they're soulmates. Meant for each other. Other half. Soul mates.
And now.
He thinks of her all the time. He misses her so terrible, that it's as if someone had taken away half of his soul. The pain was almost physical.
So many times he was tempted to allow the silver chord do what it does, and drag him back to Briar Creek. Just so he can see her, hear her voice. But he knows he can't.
He promised he'd be the knight in shining armour, returning to his lady with slain dragons. He'll keep his promise.
So they will wait.
Another meteor falls from the sky and slides beneath the horizon, as if a single tear drop, falling.
Don't you think The Reason by Hoobastank so suite Ash?
