Another Steeleye Span songfic, don't own the tune, some of the lines, the
title or the plot of the
song. Pity, as it's a great tune to sing really loudly and passionately to
(as I do!). I really wish you
could hear the music as you read this.
There's actually a story that I've formulated to go with this believe it or not! I wrote the songfic from a random female character's point of view, but in the time between then and now I read a Gimli/Legolas slashfic (I'm really sorry I can't remember who wrote it, or even the title, but whoever you are I thank you so much!), and when reading this through my mind twisted the song round. I didn't need to change any of the words, but just ended up evolving the story round it.
It's based on the fact that Legolas left Middle-earth with Gimli after the death of Aragorn, which I'm kinda obsessed about that at the moment. Anyway Legolas and Gimli hear the news of Aragorn's death and Legolas then decides to sail over Sea to Valinor. He tells Gimli this, and the reason, which is that there is nothing left in Middle-earth strong enough to hold him back from the pull of the Sea. He then rushes out of the room to hide his tears from the Dwarf, who thinks that he's just upped and left. Gimli sings this during the time Legolas is out of the room, before he comes back in to invite Gimli to go with him.
I'm assuming that Legolas is at Aglarond, the Glittering Caves, with Gimli when the King dies, for no particular reason apart from the line 'When a bold set of ruffians broke into our cave' in the original version of the song, and with the fact that they sailed together it makes more sense if they hear the news at the same time. I realise that Legolas leaves rather quickly in this fic, he basically says, 'Ok, he's dead, I'm off!', but they did leave in the same year Aragorn died, and Hey! this is my fic and I can do what I like with it. ;-)
Legolas also leaves soon in this fic as in the original the lover was press-ganged. The call of the Sea was as hard for Legolas to resist as the press-gangs were. They either got you dead drunk, or, as in this case, beat you up to get you on board ship to serve in the Navy. Honestly, if you get a chance to hear the original, please do so, it's great! (I'm very biased when it comes to Steeleye) R/R please!
All Things Are Quite Silent
All things are quite silent, each mortal at rest,
When me and my true love lay snug in one nest,
When a messenger came from the King's shining hall,
Saying: 'Lord Aragorn he is living no more'.
I begged hard to my darling, I did plead and did pray,
But the Sea's call was too strong to 'llow him to stay,
Saying: 'There's nothing to hold me, to the Seas I must go'
And he's left me lamenting in sorrow and woe.
Through green fields and forests we oftimes have strode,
And over green meadows on Arod have rode,
Where the elanor flowers so sweetly they bloom,
Never knowing my true love must part from me soon.
Now although I'm forsaken I won't be cast down,
Who knows but my true love some day may return,
And will make me amends for my trouble and strife,
And me and my true love may be happy for life.
The only downside is that I cannot listen to the original now without the urge to laugh out loud building up inside me. I'm really not going to tell people what makes me laugh, as my friends who also like Steeleye Span would probably start humming the tune at the most awkward moments, eg during an exam, my wedding day, cat's funeral etc. You get the idea!
The other downside is that now I've written this they'll know anyway... I just hope they don't use the above as a suggestion!
A/N: ' 'llow ' in the second verse is an abbreviation of 'allow'- it scans that way.
