A Mother's Letter To Her Daughter

AN: Well, this is my fanfic.

Disclaimer: I do not own any of Tamora Pierce's books.

Dear Milandrea:

So, today is your 10th birthday, the start of your life, whichever you choose. There are two lives that lay ahead of you: to go to the convent and become a lady, or to go the palace and become a lady knight. Although I can only tell you of one, I hope you make a wise decision and go with what your heart desires.

Sometimes life will push you in an attempt to throw you off course, but you must remain strong and never leave your dreams in the dirt. Sometimes you've just gotta go with the flow and sometimes you've need to stand strong.

But above all, you need to believe in yourself and in your abilities. If you falter in faith in yourself, whom you know best, it will be difficult to trust others.

As I was once your age, I remember the first day I went into training as a page. I was on probation and was shunned by the majority of my fellow pages. Very few reached out to make friends with me, and they, too, were taunted for being my friends.

As the life of page progresses, you'll find yourself at a crossroad. For when you become a squire, there's no turning back, even if you truly wish to. You are bound to your knightmaster and bound to take the Ordeal of Knighthood.

Ah, yes, the Ordeal of Knighthood. It was my most memorial time as a squire, I can assure you. You are faced with your most deepest fears and forbidden to cry out. Some have gone mad and others have died. You must be prepared to face this head-on.

But whatever you choose, I am sure you will go where life takes you. I am sure, for you will always be my daughter, and I am proud of you, no matter what you decide.

Your mother,

Lady Knight Keladry of Summer Point, Court of King Roald.

Mila folded the letter back up and put it in her pocket. She knew already what she would choose. Her mother's letter had just made her more certain.

At court the next day, the new Overseer of Pages and Squires sneered "Ah, yes, Cleon and Keladry's daughter, right? I daresay we can expect a lot from you. Daughter of the new King's Champion and the Protector of the Small. Tut, tut, tut, when will they learn women belong in the convent or in the manor, watching children?"

Mila had been fully ready to teach this ignoramus a lesson, but she remembered her mother's letter, which was now folded and in a special place. She bit the inside of her cheek and sighed.

Her life as Page Milandrea of Summer Point, daughter of Cleon and Keladry of Summer Point, formerly of Mindelan (AN: I can't remember where Cleon came from), firstborn of King Roald's Champion and the famous Protector of the Small, was about to begin.

AN: *grin* so does it suck? NO FLAMES! And just to let you know, I'm not a Cleon/Kel fan, I just decided to do ONE fic according to the book. But then again, I haven't read "Lady Knight" and in Song of the Lioness, it looks like Alanna going to choose Jon, but she doesn't, so maybe Kel will wind up with Neal after all! *grin again*
