He was splayed out in the grass, staring up at the night sky with that faraway smile. Three years, and she had almost forgotten how it lit up his face. How it tugged at something inside her, something that she had convinced herself was gone forever.
She shifted slightly, resting her head against his Reshiram's flank. It wasn't exactly soft, but she was grateful for the warmth. There was something about it, the heat that resonated from somewhere deep within, that appealed to her.
(It was life, but she didn't know that yet.)
Tilting his head so he could catch her gaze, N smiled again at the sight of them. Watching his Pokemon- no, not his. It was the Pokemon that had chosen him as its hero, and now it had accepted his best friend as well. The light of her Zekrom's tail pulsed rhythmically, bathing everything in a neon blue before fading into darkness again. This was what he had worked so hard to achieve. A world of peace between people and Pokemon. A world where Touko, his Touko, could curl up alongside a legend without fear.
(A world of love, but he only maybe-sort-of believed in that right now.)
N looked back and forth between the two Pokemon again, smiling softly. Their rivalry had seemed impossible to overcome- but they had once been a single being, hadn't they? Their unity was what made a battle between the two impossible to win, and in time, it was what ended those battles for good. Reshiram and Zekrom hadn't fought since he and Touko met in the castle, and neither one spoke of it. He tried to convince himself it was because they didn't need to. Three years, and it was as if everything just fell back into place.
"Truth or ideals, Touko?"
She stirred, surprised, and for a moment he was concerned that he'd woken her. But as she sat up straighter, appraising him with bright blue eyes, her answer was quick and decisive. "Both," she decided.
N regarded her, confused. "I know that the formula for changing the world requires a combination of the two... but hasn't one changed your life more than the other? How can they be equal?"
Two dragons lifted their heads, waiting.
"Because they're the same," Touko answered simply. The trace of red in her cheeks was lost on the green-haired hero who waited in darkness for an explanation. "The truth for me, and what's ideal... right here, right now, they're identical."
N frowned. "I don't... I don't understand..."
"Then I'll make it easy," she promised. "Three words, that's all it'll take."
"If it's so easy, then tell me!" he insisted, sitting up and leaning towards her slightly in anticipation of whatever secret was about to be revealed. Touko mirrored his movement, slowly bringing herself closer to him. N had finally come home to her, and she didn't know for how long. Before, their goodbyes had been too fast, her heart and mind too numb. But she was ready now. She wouldn't lose him for a second time.
It was a whisper the dragons strained to hear, and they marveled at the miracle their heroes had created for each other.
("I love you.")
Pretty short and definitely not my best, but it was an idea that popped into my head and refused to get out until I developed it a little more xDD; I've been able to keep up this drabble-a-day schedule pretty well so far, and I'm hoping to continue, so pairing suggestions are welcome! Feel free to suggest your favorite ship in a review or a PM~
